The Legislature. n< m Report of the Work of the li< Law-makers by Represen- pe tative Jones, of Lancaster a ?Many Matters of Public ^ Interest Still Pending-Pro- aQ posed Road Law for this County. th ^ """"""""" Ed. Lancaster News: I have ffP no good excuse for not writing ? tii except that I have been aillicted ^ with what our old friend Henry Hancock savs is the common heritage of poor lolks?bad cold, pi and I certainly liave bean al 8fl most 9ick enough to be off duty, , . . ll but have not missed a session ol t V the House. I was waiting until I could write something done, llc but if there is one virtue about , Mr this Legislature it is that it is ?1] going slow, and I think that onehalf at least of the hills in oduc fa ed will die a natural death, and ll that will be bo much better for tin the people. The great number ll of bills introduced does not mean fc? that so many laws are needed, for we have as many as ten on ^ the same matter and ma7 be several batches of this kind. A bill on my desk is marked 1228, so you may guess this is a good big batch. The bills that have caused most trouble are the prohibition, the lien law, the insurance bills, bills on education and the contract labor law. These 0< have not yet been disposed of Ol entirely. The prohibition ques- pr tion is likely to go before the ee: people in the next primary elec nr ? ? - " A. tion. The lien law, it is thought, no will be repealed by both houses, on Education is receiviug ratber ch the lion's share. All the col- wi leges have their usual large ap- fG' propriations. The high school wj was provided for in the same ?o amount appropriated last year, $1 but there has been much talk ur against the high school law Ui Yet, the Legislature seems to be re committed to echools of every kind. The appropriation bill will in* be about the same as it was last tie year. The House would not mat- nn erially change the salaries of the Tt , State officers. There is yet some H hope tor this Legislature. It an tries to cut expenses sometimes, th but is it generally the little matters that they try to cut. We succeeded in getting that useless w n niipfinriu f i n n fr?r flnnluilorato -rr'T?%,-m.vviw.w. v w< Veterans' Reunion cut out of the a appropriation bill, and I th ink pfi will get the other appropriation m( for artificial limbs cut off, which v.e consider robbing the old vet- ^ erans of that much pension, ^ which they need to be added to 1 w I their regular pension. We have ^ about perfected our road law and it has giveu us a great deal of hard work, but we will consa tinue to work until we have ext G hausted all the mental energy that we have, before we will go OX back home without doing any- ^ thing for our roads. We pro . pose to work the roads of our county on the contract system, that is, to divide all the roads ^ of our county into sections run- ^ ning from one to five miles, and] then letting these sections to re- ^ ' *11) mrlar contractors, to he worked. Jl We have examined every county ? road law in the State or in all the counties where they have new road laws, and we can find t'1 no better system than we have til ,V adopted. We know that it will ru I 11U T! >t meet the ideas of every an, but we have a firm convic3U that if the scheme is pro >rly carried out we will have system which will ultimately ve our people good roads. As on as it runs its course, we will nd it to you, that you may ve it to the people. I want e young men of our county to 't ready to fdaae contracts and 't busy during *all the spare no from their larms working e public roads. I have seen e Chester delegation about it tin? a bridge across the Caw-] ba river at ForCLawn, bu? thev y just at tliis time they cannot sip us on account of their coun expenses being heavy just )W. The weather is very rough iwn here at this time, and I tess it is very hard with you. 11 our Lancaster people are irly well, but Mr. Williams; he is been confiued I suppose a iy or two to his room, but I sard yesterday that he was betr. Wn will tw-ik .. ^ nm tuuo *o bouu as anyiug of interest occurs. Respectfully yours, Geo. W.
