The celebri?t< d case of William 1). llajwood, secretary and treasurer of the Western Federation of Miners, for the murder ( f lormer Governor Frank Stuen j berg, of Idaho, the trial of which' lias been in progress for many] weeks at Boise, ended Sunday with a verdict of acquittal. The jury evidently did not believe the testimony of the noted crimi nal, Orchard, who confessed to the commission of many murders, including the assassination of Stuenberg, which he claimed was done at the instance of Haywood and other otlicers of the Federation. Moyer and Pettibone, who are also under indictment, will be tried later. The Hon. E. \\r. Pettus. Alabama's venerable United States Senator, whose old and distinguished colleague, Senator Morgan, passed away a few weeks ago, also died last Saturday. The end came at Hot Springs, N. C., resulting from a stroke of paralysis received the day before while at breakfast. Senator Pettus celebrated his SGlli birthday only a few days before his death. He will ho succeeded as Senator by former Governor Joseph F Johnston, of Birmingham, who received the nomination in the State primaries last year. Gov. Johnston's wife, by the way, who was Miss Theresa Hooper, has many friends and admirers1 iu Lancaster, where she visited I the family ot the late ('apt. B. ; J. SMITH ON COTTON AND FINl.EY ON JOHNSON. There was a big picnic ol the Woodmen of the World at Filbert, York county, last Saturday, at which addresses were made bv President Smith, of the State cotton grower' association, and i Congressman Finley. In his report of the speeches the York-' THE LA v ville correspondent of tl?e News and Courier Tays : Mr. SmilTTexpressed the opinion that there might be a 10,000,000 bale crop >e?r, provided Christmas did not come until next June, and he also expressed the opinion that cotton would bring 15 cents this tall, provided it was marketed with any business judgment on the part ot the producer o. Congres man Finley talked after dinner and devoted himself almost exclusively to polities, handling subjects entirely familiar to newspaper readers. He spoke in glowing terms of Governor Johnson, of Minnesota, as the possible nominee of the Democrats next ye ?r and expressed the opinion that he would be about the strongest card that could be played. lie stated that Johnson's democracy was of the old school type and that he would, if elected, turn back the centralization and Anti-Slate's rights propaganda that have been so assidiously advanced by the Republicans during I lie past twelve or fifteen years, and re store to the people their rights. Mr. Finley does not too strongly stress the points in favor ol Governor Johnson as a presidential nominee. He promises to be a formidable candidate lor the nomination next year. It was at the same time suggested that it might he weii for the school authorities and others in Lancaster interested in the cause of education to look into tiie matter and see whether it would he advis able for a similar move to be made here. Lamina! er cannot afford to miss any opportunity that promises 'o advance and en large its school facilities. It theie is anything for this community in the high school law we shou'd go after it. Nothing has helped to build up Lancaster more than its fine schools, many of our best and mofi useful citizens today having been induced to move here on account ot the town's exception ally good educational advantages. So important a factor therefore in the town's development should continue to receive our fostering care, t here is no doubt about the tacf that a tirstclass high school department ad iled fo our present graded school would tend to bring more permanent settlers here as well as a number of boarding students, but whethei it is practicable or advisable to obtain such a feature under the terms of the high school act passed at the last session of the legislature is a different proposition. It is one however, that should he thoroughly looked into, and no ?.:n 1%.. *i.~ i. 1 - t tJiJIJIH Will UO UJ |/Ut5 UUilHl 111 trustees, a majority of whom are leading lawyers. Various and varying conscructions have been placed upon the act in question. It was clearly the intention of the legislature to help small towns and rural communities, but owing to some of tlie conditions imposed, notably the limitation as to the minimum number of high grade pupil? in a given school, many ! v " k M. AfiKTEK NEWS, JULY 31. 1S towns of less than one thousand . inhabitants and country districts | are precluded from the benefits of the act unless several school districts unite for the purpose, which in many instances is neither desirable nor feasible. On the other hand, towns ot more than 100') inhabitants, like Winnsboro, Chester, Hock Hill, Torkville and Newberry? towns that it was never designed by the legislature should par. ticipate in the advantages of the high school act?are, under a construction of the law given it bv the State board of education, arranging to establish high schools. As interpreted by the State board, a town with a popu lalio? over the limit may "eome iu" by getting adjoining school districts to unite with it, which is just what a number ot such towns are doing.- If it is lawful j lor them to secure high schools ! in such manner, why shouldn't Lancaster do likewise?
