of Miners, for the murder

including the assassination
of Stuenberg, which he claimed
was done at the instance of Haywood

There was a big picnic ol the

Mr. SmilTTexpressed the opinion
that there might be a 10,000,000
bale crop >e?r, provided
Christmas did not come until
next June, and he also expressed
the opinion that cotton would
bring 15 cents this tall, provided
it was marketed with any business
judgment on the part ot the
producer o.
Congres man Finley talked
after dinner and devoted himself
almost exclusively to polities,
handling subjects entirely
familiar to newspaper readers.
He spoke in glowing terms of
Governor Johnson, of Minnesota,
as the possible nominee of the
Democrats next ye ?r and expressed
the opinion that he would be
about the strongest card that
could be played. lie stated that
Johnson's democracy was of the
old school type and that he
would, if elected, turn back the
centralization and Anti-Slate's
rights propaganda that have
been so assidiously advanced by
the Republicans during I lie past
twelve or fifteen years, and re
store to the people their rights.
Mr. Finley does not too strongly
stress the points in favor ol
Governor Johnson as a presidential
nominee. He promises
to be a formidable candidate lor
the nomination next year.
SHALL LANCASTER HAVE A HIGH

the same time suggested that it

and others in Lancaster
interested in the cause of education
to look into tiie matter and
see whether it would he advis

made here. Lamina! er cannot afford
to miss any opportunity
that promises 'o advance and en

is anything for this community
in the high school law we shou'd
go after it.
Nothing has helped to build
up Lancaster more than its fine
schools, many of our best and
mofi useful citizens today having
been induced to move here on
account ot the town's exception
ally good educational advantages.
So important a factor
therefore in the town's development
should continue to receive
our fostering care, t here is no
doubt about the tacf that a tirstclass
high school department ad
iled fo our present graded school
would tend to bring more permanent
settlers here as well as a
number of boarding students,
but whethei it is practicable or
advisable to obtain such a feature
under the terms of the high
school act passed at the last
session of the legislature is a
different proposition. It is one
however, that should he thoroughly

Various and varying conscructions
have been placed upon the
act in question. It was clearly
the intention of the legislature
to help small towns and rural
communities, but owing to some
of tlie conditions imposed, notably

which in many instances is
