One writer says: "The motto of every man who raises an animal of any kind y should be, "The beat is none too ^ good." The other writer says: ^01 "If a person doesn't know anything about caring for fine stock prQ he had best not purchase any re wijj gistered Berkshire hogs or Jer- can sey cattle." fror The writer of the first state- ptf)C ment is advising the Southern yQi farmer to get the best and pur- ruu est bred stock he can from which ^ to breed the animals he feeds on ^ the products of his farm. If a every farmer would heed his ad- u vice the value of the food now |)re consumed by the farm animals ^ of this state and the returns to the owners for their time and worry would be vastly increased. GOOD STOCK SHOULD HAVE GOOD ATTENTION. mil Take hogs for instance," Bro. gQn A. J. M. says if you don't, know jno. anything about caring for fine wjtj stock, don't get the registered rj article. This would convey the (ajr impression that hogs from a good j.jM breeder com* from a kind of hog jJj0( hot-bed and must have hot-bed an(j treatment to thrive. 1 have no ma( doubt that the breeding stock ol c|()1 all good breeders get better at- rpa tention than is practicable or rna. or profitable lor the average pen as v of fattening hogs to get. This jn t should be the case, not only with |)en the leading breeders who ship a|so the registered animals to their pUj customers, but should be the aj-0 rule of eve^ farmer who keeps jnj;. a brood animal on his place. But ] it doesn't follow that this care- two ful and expensive attention must too lip trivpn tn I lip nffcnrinv r?f wpII . i fc> ~ "1' "V-.- mg bred stock in order to make them ^ou Letter than scrubs. (rol It' a farmer wishes to improve hiehis stock of ho?9, the cheapest sue and easiest way is for hi:n to Id l)uv a few pigs from a good breed slot er. Then he lias only started? frot only laid a foundation. These ea-i pigs should have the attention of they deserve, not because they wht are registered slock, but because obj< they must produce sound, llirif. poi ty pigs in the future. They will givt make first-class scrubs pretty ben quick if they are not cared for. Give them a run separate from y the other hogs ot the tarni where tlioy can be fed regularly and j just what they need. They will tj respond much more freely to 8j good treatment tban poorly bred, use run-down stock. Use common- no ( sense about this as you do about selecting seed and fertilizers for your crop. Right here is where |JOW comes in 100 per cent of the pre- eye judice against improved stock. You don't build aright on the wijj foundation you buy. You de- jlQir pend too much on the fouuda- fajj tion. che TRDIGRKK IS NOT JCVKRYTHINO. V If your first purchase of pigs the THE LANCASTER NE > ?< -- a | them in the corn fi ^Cpcll IIIICIIL ope.
