It is with pleasure that we give ujifi.ce itx today'3 paper to Dr. X il's reply lo the recent cri'i 1 o-'rons that appeared in these col- I u jqus of Cleni' on College and tlie taeatmeut of the farmers who at- 1 t&nded the state institute. We ' at a ted at the time t lie charges 1 wrore made that a prompt expla- < laiioi) by ilie college authorities I was due the public* that possibly the conditions complained of were amivoidablc, and that we were 1 loath '.o believe that the officers tt>l the institution would intentionally mi street their guests? 1 "We regret to jte however some ahow of feeling on the part of Dr. Mell. It is true that he is at the head of a great institution of learning, audit is but natural iliat he should be jealous of its reputation, but he should wel ckome criticism by its friends and ajpportors, for thereby he may lie enabled to discover and cor *rcb miot ic 'mings ana irrreguiai cities the existence of which he not. have been aware. l)r. Mell says lie protests afftinsl "such article an<l editorials'' to which we have "given tVpaca." The "article" referred to is evidently the communion- 1 lion of Mr. J. T. Ilance. Mr. a nee is a reputable citizen and successful farmer of this county! and there is no reasonable or 1 fair ground upon which we t could have retiued publication 1 el his "article As a citizen and taxpayer he lias the right to ' jNublicly express iiis views upon ? the conditions a' Olemson as lie ] 3ays they appeared to him. O' < course he mav li ?vc been mista'*- | en in some particulars, hut we ' believe lie expressed his honest I opinions. It shoul 1 be borne in t mind that, his statements are i auootly of a negative character?, i hit i iys he did n >t see so and so. , t evidently did not see all I he i flue stock belonging to the col- s lege, as enumerated by Dr. Mell; s md he evidently formed an a erroneous impression as to the h flower yards. We regret exceedingly that Mr. Hance was unjust, even though unintention \ ally, in any particular, either to w I he institution or its professors. ' Jut really do not believe that he college ^ill suffer by reason Mr. TT,tpne'e s'riclures. On lie contrary, wo believe that it vill be benefited, for has not lis ''article" given the college, ' hrough I)r. Mell's reply, an i ipportunity to advertise free of iharge its splendid stock of hors- 1 >s, cows, mules, hogs, etc.? The 'article" in question lias also tfforded Dr. Mell a good oppor- 1 unity to m ike explanation as o the '-flowers around ^the processors' houses," and thus do ustice to the good wives of the irofessors. Visitors other than Mr. fiance most, likely fell into he same error. Now, so far as the editorials complained of by Dr. Mell are ;oncerned, we have no ap ilogies ? make. Having seen in both the editorial and local columns of ; ie Greenville News that farmers were complaining of their treatment at the state institute and laviinr heard restvmsihle farmers >f Lancaster make similar complaints, we, as we had a perfect right do,made comment there3ii in these columns and invited an explanation from the Clem-on authorities. Weknewnothing personally about the mat tors complained of, but inasmuch as the charges were made by men of high character and undoubted veracity we deeme 1 it our doty Indirect attention thereto in the manner in which wo did. We nave since seen references in ether papers to complaints by farmers ol alleged poor treatment while attending the stUe nstitnte. N > later tha i yesterday a prominent farmer of Lancaster toM us that he did not attend this year's institute be cause of tho fare and the rush ot several hundred men to the tables at the institute last year. He spoke, however, in highest terms of (he stock, farms, ect., which he saw at Clemson last year. Even Mr. McMahan lorm er state superintendent of education and now a candidate for Governor, in his speech at Greenville Tuesdiy u-ed strong denunciatory language in referring to allege! troatni mt of persons lately in attendance upon the tato institute, to say nothing of h:s strictures on tho m'mgeinent of the college generally. NVe do not fcl called upon to de-ride the iisuoi between Dr. Moll and bis critic. Charges have been made and th *y h i vo been ar length raplio 1 t > bv the president c' C em-on?n is now up to the people to draw their >wn conclusion^. In justice to Dr. Mell we' would add that we believe be is diicere and honest in all tlrd he says. We believe that the hill >1 tare mentioned by him was prepared for the institute?but .vore the dishes really served? From the very nature ot Ins duios as president, Dr. M?dl can tot be expected to look af or natters of detail, and while the >ill ot tare was no doubt gotten ij) for the occasion?just as tated by the doctor-?it is pusiblo that it was not c.niod out 8 directed or exp'Cte 1 !> him to j < e done. ! i Dr. K. McCor kle, now a resident of Chester, was presented by friends a few Jays ago with an elegant striking watch. The Chester papers this week give the following account of the presentation: If "all Ihe world loves a lover," it also delights in loyal friendship. Several weeks ago a plan was formed by his friends to give Mr Paul G. MeCorkle a handsome striking watch. The greatest secrecy was maintained and not a hint cf tho proposed gift was allowed to reach Mr MeCorkle. The watch, made by Paul Jeunnot, of Geneva, and purchased through our progiessive jewel er, Mr. J. C. Robinson and his expert assistant, Mr. Wise, ar rived several days ai:o. On the afternoon of August loth, while Mr. MeCorkle was in his nf]ir<> all unconscious of tho pleasure awaiting liitn, he heard a cordial greeting and upon turning from ihe telephone, was immediately presented by Mr. Dupre Anderson on behalf ot friends in Chester, Lancaster, Rock lltll and Charlotte with this elegant token of their regard. Overcome with amazement and appreciation. Mr. McCorkle could <>nlv utter a few broken sentences, for when the heart feels most, tho tongue falters and deep emotion sweep? all words from thalips. \ This gift is indeed a triumph ,1 A I. - A -1- ? - ? in iue wau'-u iiiiiKer s art. in ;i handsome pebbled gold case ig hidden a delicate and perfect mechanism, whereby on the touching of a spring is sounded t lie hour, tlie quarter, the halt threa quarters and intervening minutes, ?o thai the exact time may he known in a moment.
