"Trouble in Lancaster." Dr. Gardner on the Recent Baker Mare Episode. From the Greenwood Journal. Our good friend, Editor C. T. | Connors, of The News, relates a most thrilling experience with an old gray mare in that city one day last week. The old lady got frightened, and ran away with a wagon loaded with barrels ot water. It. seems that she had two comely mule colts, and as the old mare tlew down the street, " Hilly Buck" heard the colts that were following in the wake of their excited dame use profane words. Mr. Connors says: "Those colts have not been seen in town since, and, so far as wo know, they may be still running." Since this sudden outbreak over in Lancaster we learn that Editor Connors had two moles kiled by lightning. Mayhap uiey are the profane young mules to which he refers, or else it may be that his mules had learned the bad habit and called down upon their heads a bolt from the skies. We are sure that he will do what he can to check them, and that ''Billy Buck" will second his efforts most courageously. Neighbors Fight about Chickens. Spartanburg Herald. Mr. A. Curtis Wall, who con ducts a grocery store on North Church street, was struck on the head yesterday morning with a rocx by .Mr. George Alexander, who is a piano and machine agent. Mr. Wall is seriously in jured and is at present at the hospital, his skull having been indented by the impact of the blow. An operation was performed and at last accounts 11 e wounded man was doing well, 'the at tending physicians state that it will be impossible to ascertain the exact condition of Mr. Wall for several days. 11 is skull is not fractured as was at first thought, but there was a deep dent made in it. The two men are neighbors and reside on Park avenue. There seems to have been had bio >d between them for some time and on other occasions they had had difficulties. They fell out yesterday morning over Rome chickens, and scon became involved in h fight. There is a live foot fence between the premises of the men and each standing in his own yard commenced throwing rocks at the other. There soeniR to have been a good many stones thrown. Mr. Alexander was struck once on the head and once on the back. One rock thrown by Alexander struck Wall's head and the man was immediately rendered unconscious. lie was removed to the hospital where he later regained consciousness. The Dispensary Investigation ?More Sensational Testimony. Columbia Record. Ex-Constable M. N. Bahr, ol Charleston, and Chairman J. VV. Rawlinson, of (he present board ol dispensary directors, were on the stand before (he dispensary investigation committee t< day. Bahr tesiified to seeing big rolls of big bills, aggregating probably $2,000, tossed on a table at a Columbia hotel on one occasion, by a whiskey drummer for members of the board of control present, but says ho did not t-tay long enough to see who trot the money. Williams, laying there was no uso to go home, to stay and enjoy the car nival going on in Augusta at the time, that there was plenty of money to give them all a good time. But he could not give the name of the drummer, and did not remember who picked up the roll. J. K. Vance was put up to show Hub Evans's speculation transactions, Mr. Vance being a bucket shop man of Newberry, but the committee would not second Mr. Lyon's efforts to compel Mr. Vance to produce his books, and the witness could not rem?mht?r nnv nmnnnis willi out them. Besides there are other concern* Mr. Evans migln have dealt with in Newberry as well as elsewhere. Chairman Rawlincon, of the present board, was put up, M. Lyon trying to develop testimony going to show that this board is patronizing blacklisted concerns under new names, has awarded the glass contract without proper regard lor the instructions from the legislature, and has relused informa'ion to the subcommittee when it asked lor the list o! award*.
