The fact that there is r not enough criminal business to f warrant the holding of the June t term of court cannot be attribut- t ?d to that cause?certainly not 1 to that cause altogether, tor, it < will be recalled, for the same I reason?no business ? no June court was ^helu last year, when I the dispensary was in full blast. As a matter of fact, if our memory is not at fault, there was less occasion for a June court last year than there is for a June term now. There are now three prisoners in jail awaiting trial, while this time last year, according to our recollection, there was only one. COL. Wm BANKS AND THE OFFICE OF SECRETARY OF STATE. We have heard that there is an effort being made by the friends of Col. Win. Banks, of Colurab a, to induce him to run for Secretary of State. There is no man in South Carolina in the range of acquaintance of this writer who could fill the office with more distinction, dignity and efficiency, and while his election would spoil one of the best newspaper men extant, yet the public service would be greatly enriched thereby.?Sumter Herald. We heartily endorse what the Herald so well says in commendation of Col. Bank) as a newspaper man and as to his preeminent fitness for the office of secretary of state. The young colonel may rest assured that if he' concludes to en'er the race he will receive enthusiastic support in this part of the state, as well as elsewhere, no doubt. She ays in any old place, under the nost extraordinary circumstances ind doesn't seem to care a "con-J mental" whether she has anyhing to eat or no*. The famous Dr. Tanner is not in it when it lomes to a tasting contest with [his heu. Some time ago the hen in ques* lion fell into Mr. Mackey's well. It was just ten day9 from the ^ time of her disappearance in the well before Mr. Mackey succeeded in getting a man to ciean the well out, by which time he ex pected to find nothing of her henship except bones, feathers and foul fowl flesh. After the water had been drawn off the man descended to the bottom of the well, where he found nothing but a lot of egg shells. As he was wng i?? uie tup ;ii: tin, wondering what had become ot Mr. Mackey'fi hen, he suddenly dis covered her snuglv ensconced in acrevicein the wall. Taking her in Ins arms he brought her on out and turned her loose, and as she ran off in search of her sweetheart it was ^evident to those watching her that her little rock bed and long fasting stunt had i produced no bad results. H ow the hen survived tendavs I - - ? without food or water is truly a inysterv.
