EXTENSION OF THE C. & L. RAILROAD. The Monroe Journal says it iias authority for the statement that it is "in the bounds of pos nihility" for Monroe, instead of Lancaster, to get the Chesterfield and Lancaster railroad, which is now being extended from Ruby, in Chesterfield county, in the direction of Lynches river. According to The Journal "the route is not definitely settled beyond the Fox Plact, which is in about three miles of the Union county line, and not over thirteen in a direct line from Monroe." The Journal is of the opinion that "Monroe. Marsh ville and other North Carolina towns" will receive a "tremen clous blow" unless Monroe is made the road's ''outlet." There has always been?at least ever since the road was chartered?a paucity of in for raation on this side of Lynches river as to what are the ultimate plans of the C. <ft L. projectors. A vague sort of impression has prevailed for a long time, how -ever, that the road would eventually be extended to Lancaster, but when or by whom uobcdy seems to know. The eastern section of Lancaster county cer tainly oilers an inviting field to the promoters of the road, ai d it is not likely that they will ignore its promising possibilities by turning olF and going to Monroe. It appears that the game has degenerated into one of fierce brutality, the contests oftentimes resulting iu death or serious bodily harm to the players Although the pre aent season has advanced but a few weeks, the deaths thus far recorded number twenty and the injured over one hundred nod fifty, not including the casualties of Thanksgiving day. The authorities of the various institutions of learning throughout the country are taking the matter up and the indications J are that the game will either be radically reformed or abolished altogether. Already the faculty t of the Columbia University of i New York has forbidden its r students to play the game any 1 more. For weeks at a time teams are away from i, their cla-s-rooms, traveling over w the country to fulfill engagements with other college teams, ( thereby losing time from their " stud es which it i9 impossible for them to make up. A THANKSGIVING SENTIMENTS. * The Southern Christian Ad vocate of Thursday?Thanks . giving day?contains many Thanksgiving sentiments writ ten, at the request of the editor, by both ministers and laymen.
