CLINTON DIGEST DUNN NAMED ASSISTANT GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT Tommy Dunn has assumed the position of Assis tant General Su perintendent of Yarn Manufac turing for the Geneva Plants. Dunn was pre viously Assistant General Superin tendent of No. 1 Carding and Spinning and No. 2 Carding. COWART NAMED TO NEW POSITION James Cowart has assumed the newly created position of Super intendent of Yarn Manufacturing for the Geneva Plants. Cowart will oversee card ing and spinning for Plants 1 & 2. Cowart joined Clinton Mills in 1978 and has held numerous posi tions since that time. BEACH NAMED ASSISTANT TREASURER Tom Beach has been named As sistant Treasurer of Clinton Mills. Beach joined the Company in 1988 as Manager of Costs and Bud gets. In addition to overseeing the Company’s costs and budgeting ac- tivities, he has responsibilities for tax and other related financial matters. GENEVA EARNS SAFETY AWARD Members of the Safety Committee of the Cieneva Plant received a Safety Award during ceremonies in Montgomery, Alabama. The hourly associates of Clinton’s Geneva Plants have received a Safety Award from the Alabama Tex tile Manufacturers Association (ATMA) for making significant improvements in their overall safety performance. The group earned two Third Place Awards in the Weaving Division for having no lost time accidents and for having the most improved safety record. The Geneva Plant awards were among 27 presented to plants for operating with the lowest or no lost time accidents. Overall, the textile industry is rated by the National Safety Council as one of the safest industries in the United States. Fork Lift Classes Put Safety And Quality First Clinton recently held fork lift operator training classes as part of its safety and Quality First activities. Each participant received instruction in all phases of fork lift safety and the fundamentals of operation, maintenance, and care. The training is meant to prevent lift truck accidents, promote safe work practices, prevent product damage during handling, prolong equipment life, reduce maintenance costs, and comply with state and federal regulations. CLINTON EXPANDS PLANT SAFETY COMMITTEES Six new Safety Committees have been created on second and third shifts at Clinton Plants, bring ing more associates into this important team process. Each member of these new Safety Committees has received training to improve overall safety in their plants. Crowder joined the Com pany in August, 1979. GENEVA FORGES AHEAD ON QUALITY FIRST ACTION TEAMS Five teams of Geneva associates have been busy since January implementing the Quality First concept to solve numerous quality and safety problems. The first team was formed to address loom roll build and handling procedures. The team successfully reduced excessive build on looms, which had caused roll run problems on cloth room inspection frames and also had contributed to seconds. First Quality First Team: Buddy Aughtman. Team Leader and Sulzer Tech; Dale McCollough, Cloth Handler; Diana Helms. Secretary and Cloth Inspector; David McQueen. Cloth Handler; Ernie Sommerset. Cloth Roll Coverer; Troyce Crutch field, Maintenance Tech; Irby McCollough, Assistant Departmental Superintendent, weaving second shift; and Max Padgett, Cloth Room Departmental Superintendent. Inital data compiled by the team show ed that 35 percent to 50 percent of rolls were unacceptable. After weeks of work, the team deter mined that damaged tubes were the primary cause of the problem. So it searched for new suppliers and began im plementation of its solutions. A second Quality First Team was organized to focus on card sliver weight variation at Plant No. 2 The team has had 14 meetings and has presented “project updates” to the Steer ing Committee on two occasions. It is making progress and process variability is being reduced. A third team was created by the Steering Third Quality First Team: Rev ion Tidwell. Committee to address safety issues. This team includes members of the Steering Committee and other associates. The team’s safety projects have includ ed wet restroom floors and better plant housekeeping. As a result of its efforts, full doors and 14-inch fans have been in stalled in restrooms, which have eliminated wet floors. The Steering Committee also formed a Fourth Quality First Team: Ken Ellis, Assistant Departmental Superintendent — Weaving and Team Leader; Martha Jones. Loom Technician, and Gerald Danley, Loom Technician. fourth Quality First Team to eliminate cloth seconds caused by oil. Using a statistical test to identify the na ture of oil contamination, the team con cluded that certain weave room practices and conditions were the primary culprits and these situations are currently being addressed.
