A LONG WALK Speaker, displays highlight Sexual Assault Awareness Week Gina Uasselli STAFF WRITER ’ The Sexual Health and Violence Prevention Office is recognizing April as Sexual Awareness Month with a week of events to raise sexual assault awareness. Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Services Program Director Brett Carney said the goal of the office is to both educate students and substantiate victims. “This campaign is two-fold,” Carney said. “The first goal is awareness and education. The second goal is to validate the survivors that are already here. We want to let them know that we recognize their experience and that we’re here to help.” The Sexual Health Awareness and Rape Education program, known as SHARE, conducts events all year to raise awareness about sexual assault and rape. Rosalyn Moses, a survivor of sexual assault, spoke in the Calcott auditorium Tuesday night about her experiences and how to prevent sexual assaults. Tuesday was also National Denim Day, marking the 1999 Italian Supreme Court case overturning a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans. According to the Sexual Health office, “the justices opined that since jeans are not easily removed without cooperation, and impossible to take off if someone is resisting, the victim must have been complicit in her assault.” Community members wear jeans to protest the verdict. The Clothesline Project — a national undertaking consisting of T-shirts made by survivors of sexual assault and violence — will be displayed today on Greene Street. Each T-shirt’s color represents the different experiences of the survivors. According to the Sexual Health office, pink T-shirts are for survivors of sexual assault. Light blue shirts are for survivors of incest or child sexual abuse, and yellow are for survivors of relationship abuse. Purple shirts are for those attacked because of their sexual orientation, while white are for those who have died from violence. Carney said the Clothesline Project was designed to “wake people up to what’s on their campus.” “We’ve been participating (in the Clothesline Project) for a very long time with great responses,” Carney said. Derek DeBruin, a first-year computer science student and member of SHARE, said the program was chosen to be part of the week of events because “it gives survivors of sexual assault a voice without having to come into the public.” “They have a voice while maintaining anonymity, if that’s what they want,” DeBruin said. “It’s their T-shirt; they can W£CK • 9 SG BILL ' WOULD : MAKE GRADS HELP OUT Graduate programs would have to benefit undergrads Jess Dauis STAFF WRITER Graduate student organizations will have to provide access to undergraduates to get funding from Student Government if a bill introduced today in the Senate passes. Similar legislation was introduced two weeks ago as part of another bill changing the finance codes, but it was withdrawn to allow the Finance Committee to make further changes. The bill stipulates that the Finance Committee can only give funds to graduate schools, organizations or programs that are open to undergraduate involvement via membership, participation or attendance. Previously, there had been no -;—c.___j for graduate organizations to receive funds from the committee. A precedent was set years ago that after the committee allocated ' its funds, which come from undergraduate student activity fees, to all undergraduate organizations, one-time allocations would be given to the graduate schools to be distributed as each school saw fit. Finance committee chairman Scott Spivey, a third-year finance student, said he does not expect or want the legislation to prevent graduate organizations from getting funding, but he only wants to make sure undergraduates have access to their funds. The committee voted last week 7 to 1 to pass this bill, with law student Adam Russell the only dissenting vote. President Pro Tempore Chase Stoudenmire, a second-year history student, said he thinks the bill will have a better chance of “getting fair consideration” in its current form and as a separate bill. “In the previous bill there were three significant issues, but in (bill) BILL • 6 A Day in the Life % Bus drivers powerful pipes prove popular with students Leslie Draffin THE GAMECOCK From the moment USC students step into Bolivar Ceveno’s red-route shuttle ^^bus, his blaring oldies music, thumbs-up attitude and smiling face make everyone feel at DRV • 8 Jessica Beltman / THE GAMECOCK Members speak at a fraternity panel discussion Monday night in the Belk Auditorium.
