Many youths enter the foster system already behind, shell shocked from neglect or abuse, unable to concentrate in class. Or they lose time, class credits and transcripts by transferring schools repeatedly, as they shuttle among foster homes. They have no safety net. No parents prod them. Social workers come and go. Then they turn 18. Each spring, specialists from Contra Costas Independent Living Skills ■ Program — designed specially to help those leaving the foster system — scramble to make sure 90 or so teens are ready to face adult life. “We really want to do well by our youth and it really pains all of us when we can’t do things for them,” says Danna Fabella, the county’s director of Children and Family Services. “The emotional part of being out there on your own when you’re 18 is so overwhelming.... Those of us who have not gone through that, we can only think about what that’s like.” Tish has learned to hold tight to anyone who shows an interest in her uprooted life. She has a gift for drawing people in, said Corey Johnson, one of her high school teachers. Her friends know they can talk to her about anything. Her teachers love her can-do attitude. “It’s the students like her that really make it worthwhile,” he said. “She’s got a spark.” Tish also has earned the admiration of her most recent social worker, Carl Nishi, who wrote scholarship recommendations on her behalf. “Of all the kids on my caseload I think Kantisha has the greatest challenges,” said Nishi. “She has the weakest family support system.”
