GRAY KNIGHT HIDDElt NEWSPAPERS The authors of the hugely suc cessful “Left Behind” series are a little sad these days, but not be cause they don’t expect their lat est book to be as big as the others. It’s because this is the final oook in ttye series. The concluding novel, “Glorious Appearing,” appeared on bookshelves Tuesday. It is the 12th and last installment of the se ries of Christian prophecy novels that began in 1995 and has sold nearly 60 million copies. “It’s been a fantastic ride, above anything I dreamed of,” said Tim LaHaye, who with co-author Jerry Jenkins held a telephone press con ference with religion writers from across the country last week. LaHaye, a noted author a,nd minis ter who dreamed up the idea for a novel about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, said, “There’s some what of a disappointment coming to the end and thinking that we won’t have a wonderful new addi tion at this time next year. ” Jenkins, also a best-selling au thor before co-writing the “Left Behind” series, said he ap proached the final book with great trepidation about how to do jus tice to “the greatest story that’ll ever happen in the history of the cosmos.” The “Left Behind” series takes the reader on an action-packed ride through the seven-year period called the tribulation, recounting the harrowing experiences of a small band of people who were left behind after the rapture, an event in which Christians suddenly dis appear b fore the end of the world. Ever since the rapture, the people in the novels have become believ ers and are fighting to stay alive as they engage the Antichrist and his followers, who rule the world. The books have not only been Christian best sellers, but also the last five books have reached No. 1 on all major best-seller lists, in cluding The New York Times. Beyond its financial success, the series has sparked interest in bib lical prophecy and end-time events and has brought popular attention to Christian fiction. Tyndale House Publishers is anticipating “Glorious Appearing” will be another blockbuster. Dan Balow, business development di rector for the series’ publisher, said that with the timing of the book’s release right before Easter, Tyndale expects it “to do a tremendous amount of bi iiness out of the gate.” Crossword ACROSS 1 Get a whiff of 6 Wearing shoes 10 Hairless 14 Actress Marisa 15 Grant or Elwes 16 Field of expertise 17 Uses a lasso 18 “Catch-22" star 20 Type of general 22 Approach 23 According to 24 Mas' men 26 Washer cycle 30 Office gambling games 35 Demon 37 Old card game 38 Writer Mentoff 39 Converts into machine language 42 Poly follower? 45 Picnic invader 46 Agile deer 48 Bee and Em 49 Not the best time to buy 54 Author of “The Other" oo iwr ia participant 56 Pique 59 Explosive sounds 62 Break into pieces 65 Scorned to hold water 69 Ta-dal 70 Redolence 71 Equal scores 72 Molding curves 73 Implores 74 Hot tubs 75 Fritter away DOWN 1 Razor sharpener 2 Peter of Herman's Hermits 3 With all its faults 4 Charges 5 Closed hand 6 Egyptian talisman I I I I I I I ® 2004Tribun* Media Service®, Inc.
