‘Left Behind’ novel marks end
of popular apocalyptic series
BY HELEN T. GRAY
KNIGHT HIDDElt NEWSPAPERS
The authors of the hugely suc
cessful “Left Behind” series are a
little sad these days, but not be
cause they don’t expect their lat
est book to be as big as the others.
It’s because this is the final
oook in ttye series.
The concluding novel,
“Glorious Appearing,” appeared
on bookshelves Tuesday. It is the
12th and last installment of the se
ries of Christian prophecy novels
that began in 1995 and has sold
nearly 60 million copies.
“It’s been a fantastic ride, above
anything I dreamed of,” said Tim
LaHaye, who with co-author Jerry
Jenkins held a telephone press con
ference with religion writers from
across the country last week.
LaHaye, a noted author a,nd minis
ter who dreamed up the idea for a
novel about the Second Coming of
Jesus Christ, said, “There’s some
what of a disappointment coming
to the end and thinking that we
won’t have a wonderful new addi
tion at this time next year. ”
Jenkins, also a best-selling au
thor before co-writing the “Left
Behind” series, said he ap
proached the final book with great
trepidation about how to do jus
tice to “the greatest story that’ll
ever happen in the history of the
cosmos.”
The “Left Behind” series takes
the reader on an action-packed ride
through the seven-year period
called the tribulation, recounting
the harrowing experiences of a
small band of people who were left
behind after the rapture, an event
in which Christians suddenly dis
appear b fore the end of the world.
Ever since the rapture, the people
in the novels have become believ
ers and are fighting to stay alive as
they engage the Antichrist and his
followers, who rule the world.
The books have not only been
Christian best sellers, but also the
last five books have reached No. 1
on all major best-seller lists, in
cluding The New York Times.
Beyond its financial success, the
series has sparked interest in bib
lical prophecy and end-time events
and has brought popular attention
to Christian fiction.
Tyndale House Publishers is
anticipating “Glorious Appearing”
will be another blockbuster. Dan
Balow, business development di
rector for the series’ publisher, said
that with the timing of the book’s
release right before Easter, Tyndale
expects it “to do a tremendous
amount of bi iiness out of the gate.”

ARIES You’re working not only
because you have to, or
because you said you would,
but because you want to fulfill
your destiny. Doesn’t that
make the effort more fun?
TAURUS As you and your loved
ones figure out what you want
to accomplish, you’ll notice
that you’re out of the planning
phase and into the heavy work.
This is happening now.
GEMINI This evening and
tomorrow are good for
romance. You ought to be
ready for a little luxury by
then. Set it up.
CANCER You have a good
friend who understands how to
keep you from getting upset.
You’re a very gentle person,
but sometimes you have a
short fuse. Call this friend if
you need to calm down.
LEO You can learn how to
understand a person who’s
constantly changing. Provide
security. What goes around will
come around.
VIRGO Over the next few days
you should have an easy time
collecting most of what’s been
borrowed from you or is owed
to you. Surely you have a list
somewhere. Get on it.
LIBRA A letter to a distant
friend is the best way to
explain feelings you’ve
recently discovered. Keep a
copy for yourself. This could
turn out very well.
SCORPIO There’s certainly no
shortage of work to be done,
and done urgently. It all seems
to be due yesterday, and
through no fault of your own.
Rest up for a busy tomorrow.
SAGITTARIUS It’s much easier
to get your point across, and
with less hassle involved. Even
a person who wouldn’t listen
before might come around
now. Try again.
CAPRICORN All the work
you’ve been putting in is •
starting to show results.
You’ve drawn the attention of
an important person who can
help you get to the bottom line.
Dress well.
AQUARIUS A hassle that’s been
slowing you down is about to be
resolved. You might not have to
do anything differently, either.
It clears up naturally.
PISCES Should you spend or
save, and how much either
way? You’re not good at this
type of problem. It’s not
cheating to consult an expert,
and in this case it’s a good
idea.
