BY BRIAN RAY THE GAMECOCK The LSU Tigers are gearing up for what head coach Nick Saban hopes will be a prosperous season. “I am really pleased with the ef fort of the players. 1 think a lot of players have improved a great deal,” Saban said. LSU has the makings of a formi dable team despite a large number of graduating seniors last year. It lost 17 letter-men including two spe cialists, but has been training hard in Baton Rouge, La., and Saban said everyone's looking good. The top returnees are corner backs Corey Webster and Stephen Peterman. Webster has been named SEC Player of the Week against Florida with three inter ceptions. Last year Webster led the SEC in interceptions with sev en total, and Peterman was named first-team All-SEC in 2002 by The LSU’s Corey Webster led the SEC with seven picks in 2002 and was named to the first team All SEC. He’s started 25 games during the past two sea sons. “Devery Henderson is getting a little healthier, and Skyler Green is doing some good things,” Saban said. “Bennie Brazell is having a good camp, so I think our receivers are coming together. Joseph Addai has had a really good camp at running back, and I think the quarterback sit uation continues to make progress.” But the season hasn't even started for the Tigers, and they've already losta top player. baDan saia wiae receiver Amp Hill, a freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., underwent surgery to reat tach his medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament. It's a major blow to Hill, who won't be back to normal for three months. Hill was ranked in the top-25 wide receivers byESPN.com and has caught the eye of newspapers across the .country. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ranked him as one of the Super Southern 100. However, it looks like the Tigers will have to make it by without him this season. “We are going to coach him and try to get him ready to be a good player when he gets back,” Saban said. “He is very disappointed, but he certainly has taken a positive attitude into reestablishing his goals to be a starter next year.” The staff at LSU has praised Saban for his leadership skills and * attributed him with bringing the Tigers back to competitive status during the last four years. In 2001, he led the Tigers to their first SEC cnampionsnip since 19«». neiore taking the job as head coach of the Tigers in 2001, Saban served as head coach at Michigan State University, and prior to that he was an assistant coach to the Houston Oilers. He has also served as head coach at Toledo State University. The Tigers, who went 8-5 last year, play the first game of the sea son on Aug. 30 against the University of Louisiana-Monroe at the Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.
