GAME 6 Kentucky at USC Thursday, Oct. 9 Columbia, S.C. BY COREY GARRIOTT TOE GAMECOCK For all of their growing pains, Kentucky’s new head coach Rick Brooks keeps a good attitude. “Hold the team not expect them to au tomatically embrace and respect me—felt I had to earn that,” he said. “My goal is to win enough games for this senior class to have them leave with a bowl game under their belt.” He’s not shooting for the stars; this fall will be a season of renewal. The Wildcats lost most of its defensive line, four lead ing tacklers, the top receiver, Aaron Boone and the top scorer, running back Artose Pinner. Pinner’s loss is an especially harsh blow because Kentucky has no returning running back. The most experienced al ternative, Shane Boyd, only ran 124 yards 1 4- T 7AO V» The inexpe rienced defense worries Kentucky fans because defen sive coordina tor Mike Archer switched to a 3 4 defense from a 4-3 set. A 3-4 defense re quires a quick linebacker and Kentucky has no returning starters at that position. Many • thought the Wildcats were headed for a bad season last year but Kentucky roared out of the gate with a 4-0 winning streak. And, of course. Brooks m S Wfe.... Starting quarterback Jared Lorenzen and his beefy arm will return this fall. Lorenzen holds the Kentucky school record for offensive yards and stands a chance of breaking the SEC career record for offensive yards, also. “I believe Jared Lorenzen is a big time quarterback—can play on Sundays in the NFL,” Brooks said. “The guy isn't going to give the ball away.” Lorenzen might have to share his sen ior year glory with Shane Boyd, however. Kentucky plans to trot out an unusual dual-quarterback system sometimes to confuse the opposing defense. “They'll be in backfield together, both be back in shotgun,” Brooks said, and the “defense won't know which one will get the snap.” It'll probably be used sparingly, like when the Wildcats have to take a risk. But if it isn't used too much it could fool a few on the other side of the ball right when Kentucky needs it. Wide receiver Derek Abney also will return. Abney is quite the record-holder himself, with five NCAA records, nine SEC records and 10 school records for kick returns. He returned six kick re turns for touchdowns last season, more than any one player in one NCAA sea son. went 7-5 over all last season, 3-5 in the SEC. This year Kentucky plays its rival, Louisville, in a home game at the season's start. After a first-time meet ing with Murray State, the Wildcats will play kat Alabama and Indiana on Sept 13. and Sept. 20. They play at USC on Oct. 11. Other big games in clude a home game with Florida Sept. 27 and the final game at home with Tennessee Nov. 29. “ g«iaw[?sgcM CF>CL£^(S3 t* 9 9 9 m »UQWW 3$ ffl®ass ®p 1ZD3C08 0®oj? 0®ca?ss 0®^ JwgS Hf|“ sia®8™ | (SSXSXPGm &SWPCSXB I mm Cl PSSS i «OQ0 'Wffi&TO [?(£X2 O<0®3 LJ ^‘pws^ys'pacsxas W£) 03K£X£>©S Pe©£> 0®°E/^QffSo CaQGOa^OCsXLPo 0JZ8BC2 HR® S22P9S3S aQz7@S I \Y7asav ©s ©a was rass 9 J GWR (fttf a :2mm 1 ^@scmi!> (UsKZBS @C] (D£s(3!«9®G] @(ySE^> 3® 3^C3S3®3I2S
