Preston CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 mark left over from the old ener gy plant. Charles Jeffcoat, the director of Facilities Planning and Construction, said the new con struction will “improve the ap pearance of the space, provide better student access from the Horseshoe to the Russell House and improve the service access to the buildings in the area.” The project calls for new lighting, trees, shrubs and flowers to com piemem me norsesnoe. The President of Preston College, Chris Robinson, said that some of his residents will be upset by the loss of parking spots, but he himself is “person ally delighted.” Robinson said that more green space is always nice and that we should look to the beauty of the Horseshoe to see what more green space could mean for the university. With the elimination of the parking lot near the Russell House two years ago, some stu dents have been parking in the faculty lots behind Preston and Woodrow. Traci Hunter, a third-year ad vertising student, disagreed with the continued trade of parking spots for grass. “You can really see how much the Trustees care about the stu dents when they raise tuition and take our parking spots to beautify a space that only a few students see,” Hunter said. Though the Preston Green proj ect isn’t expected to be done until September, the walkway should be built before school starts. The university master plan calls for moving more parking to the edge of campus, but it lists no specific plans for greening r other parking spaces. Some streetscaping plans, like the boulevard between McBryde Quad and the Towers that re placed several metered spaces, are still on paper.
