(AP) - Later this week, Ernest Hemingway will be spotted everywhere, or at least a lot of guys who look like the author. The 50th anniversary of the pub lication of “The Old Man and the Sea” will be celebrated during the Hemingway Days festival, an annu al event that begins Wednesday and runs through July 21, the 103rd an niversary of the author’s birth. Hemingway regularly went mar lin fishing in the Gulf Stream off the Florida Keys. Those adventures led him to write the classic novel “The Old Man and the Sea.” Hemingway s taie oi an agea Cuban fisherman who catches a gi ant marlin, only to have it ravaged by sharks, was first published in Life Magazine in 1952. “The Old Man and the Sea” earned a Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and contributed to Hemingway receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year. “To me, it’s a quintessential sto ry of hope and loss,” said Lorian Hemingway, the author’s grand daughter. “I think it speaks to Cuba and the simplicity of life there.” Jude Law mistaken for car thief in Romania BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Jude Law got an unexpected earful at the Bucharest airport when a Romanian politician mistook the ac tor for a car thief. Dinu Patriciu, a leading member of the opposition Liberal Party, told The Associated Press on Friday that he saw Law and another man get into his Land Rover early Thursday at Bucharest’s Otopeni Airport. Patriciu said he yelled at the men because he presumed they were try ing to steal the vehicle. He realized his mistake when they showed him rental papers. ran iciu saiu ne nau recenuy leu the vehicle with a mechanic, telling the company it could sell the car. The firm rented it to Castel Films, a producer filming in Romania. Patriciu, who is also one of Romania’s richest businessmen, was embarrassed, but said Law’s reaction made the situation uncomfortable. “I was very unhappy because he started swearing. I am not a native English speaker but I understood what he was saying,” he said. Perdition CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 Newman is quiet and reserved but always thoughtful during his screen time. Another gem is Jude Law’s portrayal of a slightly disturbed assasain sent after the Sullivans. One of the film’s greatest flaws lies within Mendes’s directing skill. Film is supposed to secretly manipulate your emotions and therein lies its magic. With Mendes, however, all the manipulations are very up front and discernable, losing some of the magic of the movies. While this problem was glossed over in “American Beauty,” it is quite plain to see in the presentation of this film. “Road to Perdition” is a fine piece of cinema and a joy to watch. The story revolves around the relationships of fathers and sons while providing an appealing mixture of action, suspense and drama, which is certain to keep audiences interested and Oscar nominations rolling in.
