In just his first week on the job, though, Sorensen is already working through quite a busy sched ule. However, various meet ings with university and city officials did not stop the new president from interacting with students during his first day at his new post. Sorensen issued an open in vitation to any students who wished to join him for lunch in the Grand Marketplace on Monday. A number of students took advantage of the offer, in trigued by the chance to meet the new president so quickly. Sorensen has said that he wants to be accessible to stu dents and dining together is just one such opportunity. Those who were not able to attend the lunch will have an other chance to meet with the new president once classes begin in the fall. Sorensen has said that he plans to make such meetings a regu lar event, most likely about once a month. "Students will have an opportunity to tell me how I can improve my coaching," Sorensen quipped. During his tenure at the University of Alabama, Sorensen was also known to make appearances at events held by various student groups, including some fra ternity parties, though he says he doesn’t drop in unan nounced. "If I am invited and my schedule permits, I will stop by," Dr. Sorensen said. He says the same goes for all student organizations. n txviln President Sorensen has out lined an ambitious vision for USC for the future which in cludes among other things, teaching standards. Local job market sparse for college students BY BEN BRYAN THE GAMECOCK Although most students look forward to graduating, many are finding that being able to procure employment •isn't nearly as easy as it once was. With post-September 11th economic anxiety still putting a damper on the job market, students are learn ing that finding a job for the summer isn't much easier than trying to find a new or first career. USC alumni Anthony Flowers, who graduated in May of 2002, says he has been extremely frustrated in his attempt to find a job this summer. "Upon graduation, I thought it would be easy to find a job-even the most me nial one-with my degree," Flowers said, "but with the slumping economy, I've found this not to be an easy task.” Countless students are in the same predicament, only to find that their graduation happens to coincide with an unfortunate downswing in hiring for many industries. However, some businesses do manage to weather the economy rather well. Restaurants tend to do stable business even in bad eco nomic times. David Cheeks, Associate Manager of O'Charley's restaurant in Lexington, says he hasn't seen the number of employ ees change much at all, even since September 11th. Though, he says, most of the workers there are those look ing for long-term employ ment. "There's a small ration of people who come and go only about three or four per cent. Most are pretty stable," Cheeks said. ♦ LOCAL JOBS, SEE RAGE 2
