THE GAMECOCK ♦ Wednesday, July 17, 2002 . 5 IEWPOINTS__ thSSsamecock editorial board Chris Foy Editor-in-Chief Ben Bryan News Editor Carrie Phillips The Mix Editor J. Keith Allen Sports Editor Jason L. Rapp Viewpoints Editor Russell House not just a food court The Gamecock appreciates progress as much as anyone, particularly the kind that relates to USC. We support most anything that enhances USC's reputation. But we're curious as to the driving force behind the “progress” going on in the Russell House. Most certainly, the answer given would be “We're doing it for the students.” Sorrv. but we're not that naive. It's nice to be getting more campus dining options, but we're losing something in the process. Students without transportation to go off-campus for a haircut must now make special arrangements, and we don't mean ditching the 'do for a cinnamon roll. The Russell House is our student union. It's not a food court, and neither is it the Sodexho Russell House. It would be disgraceful if students were being overlooked so Sodexho can make some cash. Is USC in charge of the Russell House, or is Sodexho? Some students are bemg hurt by this complicated situation, not to mention the former tenants. Better food options help others and improve campus life, but the Russell House shouldn’t exclusively be a restaurant. ABOUT THE GAMECOCK STAFF Angel Sizemore Asst. CARTOON COURTESY OF KRT CAMPUS Pretty powerful even in pink SHANNAREED GAMECOCKVIEWPOINTS@HOTMAIL.COM Ladies can be feminine and still kick some ass “Ugh! You're such a f@&*ing lady!” she said. She said it with malice, and she said it with disgust, like some bile had just made contact with her tongue. When did this happen? What's wrong with being a lady? I'm sorry if it offends you that my legs are always shaved and I hate the f-word. I apologize if my toes are always done and my legs are crossed when I sit. I love ro mantic comedies, and “Sex and the City” rocks! Forgive me if my eye brows are always plucked, I didn't mean to offend you. It seems I've missed out on an era. When did be ing prissy go out of style? Damn it, I love being a girl. I'm not going to debate what level of respect is attributed when some one calls me a woman, a girl, or even just a chick. I’m dropping my last name when I marry I don't kiss on the first date, and my stockings match my shoes! My purse match es my shoes, for that matter. Just because all that I've said be fore is true doesn't mean I missed out on what the great Gloria Steinem had to say I know if you're not a feminist you're supposedly a masochist, but how can you be a feminist without first being femi nine? My double “X” just means I got an extra helping of the good stuff. Just because my purse matches my shoes doesn't mean that it can't also match my brief case. i natea aoiis growing up, espe cially Barbie (if you ask me, her boobs are bigger than her head, and she could stand a pair of run ning shoes if her feet ever pressed flat), but I loved my Easy Bake Oven. I'm just as likely to start my own business as I am to be the Kate Spade-toting, volunteering moth er of three. My mother was a fire-breathing Wonder Woman who could fix the television as well as sew a cor duroy jumper. She is Rosie the Riveter, saving the world in fire en gine-red lipstick. She told me to always be able to take care of myself. I am my moth er’s daughter and I learned early on that whatever you do, do it with grace. What's wrong with a little pink power in the world? I can kick ass as well as the next chick and, more often than not, I’ll do it in heels. A measure of a woman is not in how many women's studies class es she's taken or how long her armpit hair is. In the same breath, it's not in how many Manolo Blahnik's she owns or if she can tell the difference between Coach and a knock-off. Image is just that: an image, an illusion. Judge some one on the truths they tell, the love they share, and the deeds they do, not on how well they conform (or don't) to some traditional or New Age standard. kju, u. )uuic iiive me auu oume one spits fire and calls you that four-letter word, LADY, just an swer, “Why yes, yes I am a lady.” Oh, and I'd just like to say that, um... “Powerpuff Girls” rule!
