There are tear-jerking scenes between Lilo and Nani that seem too heavy for the average 6-year-old, but then again, much of this movie is geared toward an older crowd. It is filled with references to “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Jaws” and “Godzilla,” and even Elvis finds his way in to a lot of the action. (Lilo is a big fan of The King, and teaches Stitch to be too.) One of the funniest parts of the movie is when Pleakley, waving a viewfinder, convinces the Grand Councilwoman not to destroy Earth because it is a wildlife refuge for the highly endangered mosquito. This joke pleasingly runs through the whole movie. The creators of this movie took Disney in a direction by tackling real-life issues; if it seems like the Lilo and Nani part of the story is realistic in synopsis, be assured that it is in the movie too. But perhaps it is good for Disney to modernize their approach to this type of movie. Dreamworks did it with “Toy Story” and “Monsters, Inc.” and made its place as an undeniable competitor. Disney is finally catching up with the times, and hopefully it will help the company climb back into the spotlight. “Lilo and Stitch” is a cute movie that will complement the Disney repertoire, but won’t stand up to the classics.
