And moderation in the pursuit of justice is not virtue.” CD REVIEW ‘Readymades’ death rattle for Chumba CIWMBAWAMBA READYMADES Chumbawumba h out of inn BY WILLIAM MILLS THE GAMECOCK Chumbawamba’s latest release, “Readymades,” is a dance album scattered with the ramblings of a once-great group of aging British anarchists. The album is chock full of electronic beats driven along by mediocre vocals and lyrics. “Readymades” sounds less like an album created by members of the early 70s brit-punk scene and more like a sound track to a Japanese anime film. Also, the liner notes are littered with anarchist propaganda that expired three decades ago. The important difference between Chumbawamba and brit-punkers like The Clash is that their noise is devoid of the enticing incite-a riot sound. une tning tnat can De saia ior them, however, is that they do have admirable perseverance. Chumbawumba’s first full length album arrived in the hands of the misguided in 1982, and since then they have released many other LP’s and a slew of 7-inches. “Readymades” is their fourth full length release on a major U.S. label, and one of the few albums to not have a name like “Anarchy,” “Criminal Injustice,” or “English Rebel Songs.” Chumbawumba hit the U.S. dance scene with the release of ♦ CHUMBAWUMBA, SEE RAGE 8 PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Matt Damon stars as Jason Bourne in Universal Studio’s “The Bourne identity.” THE BOURNE IDENTITY Starring Matt Damon, Franka Polente and Chris Cooper ★★★★ out of ☆☆☆☆☆ BY CARRIE PHILLIPS THE GAMECOCK The CIA has always been regarded by the American public with suspicion; they shouldn’t know that much stuff anyway, so it must be corrupt. And therefore, that theme of government corruption has been a tried and true recipe for success for many modern books, movies and television shows. The Bourne Identity is based on Robert Ludlum’s 1980 novel, and Tony Gilroy’s script, though it skims the surface of the novel, captures the essence of the book and transfers it nicely to the screen. He keeps the dialogue natural and easy to the lay person’s ear and the pace of the film at just the right speed. Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”) plays Jason Bourne, an amnesiac CIA agent found MOVIE REVIEW floating in the Mediterranean by a group of fishermen. Set on dry land, Bourne goes off to find his identity, armed only with a bank account number and the knowledge that he can kick the crap out of anyone who threatens him by sheer reflex. After an incident at the American embassy in Switzerland, Bourne pays Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente, “Run Lola Run”) to drive him to Paris. Along the way, he picks up more and more clues to his identity and kicks the crap out of some more people who are sent to kill him. Interspersed with the action anu violence are scenes wiui mu is Cooper (“The Patriot,” “American Beauty”) playing Ted Conklin, Bourne’s boss at the CIA, who is trying to clean up the loose end of an assination attempt gone haywire. Bourne is that loose end, and he must fight his way past Conklin’s assasins to figure out who he is and why people are trying to kill him. This plot is easy; the audience knows exactly what is going to happen to whom and why in the first five minutes of the movie. But it certainly is fun to watch it all happen! All of the actors in the movie perform well. Damon turns in one of his best performances as Bourne; he keeps the role understated, skillfully underplaying what would have been easy to overplay. Potente’s portrayal of the wonderfully flighty and lovely Kreutz compliments Damon’s Bourne well, creating a genuine and believable on-screen phomictn; As Conklin, Cooper’s skill and talent turn the antagonist into one of the most interesting characters in the movie. Even Julia Stiles (“Save the Last Dance,” “O”) defies her past performances and turns in a good one in her side role as CIA operative Nicolette. Director Doug Liman (“Go,” “Swingers”) uses his style of bouncing cameras, blurry shots and quick edits to full advantage in “The Bourne Identity,” although there are times that it gets a little excessive.
