all kinds of fish and marine life. It will open in April. For hunters, dove fields are sprouting up all over the state again for one of the state’s biggest hunting seasons. Once the spot has been chosen, you need to decide on your supplies. A tent, backpack and sleeping bag are essential. It’s also helpful to have a kerosene lamp, flashlights and a hatchet for breaking up firewood. If you plan to cook outside, it’s best to bring only one set of utensils and plateware for each person — too much silverware can get heavy pret ty quickly when hiking. Also, a rope is always necessary at some point in a camping trip, and a cell phone can literally be a lifesaver if disas ter decides to strike. Other tidbits that can be brought along are walkie-talkies, a tarp to protect sup plies from rain, a poncho to protect you from the rain, two rolls of toi let paper in two separate plastic bags carried by two separate peo ple, and a pocket knife. So how much clothing should you bring? Too much clothing is space consuming in your backpack and can be too heavy or give you too many bags. This is especially im portant if hiking is going to be a part of the trip. The best thing is to dress in layers, perhaps with long johns, a couple of T-shirts, a sweat shirt, a jacket, jeans, and a pair of hiking boots, and bring one change of clothes. This way you can take off your clothes as it gets warmer, and the change of clothes will come in handy when you fall chest-first into a big puddle of mud. Also, bring a pair of sneakers and at least two pairs of socks in your pack. The most important thing to think about when going camping is food and water. Never rely on your fishing or hunting and gathering abilities to get food. Anything you catch or fmd is extra, so the food you pack may be the only food you can eat. The lightest and most space-ef ficient food is dehydrated, which makes it the best to bring if you’ll be backpacking around for days. Canned foods are an extreme hassle since they can leak and are very heavy, so they’re usu ally not a good idea. The best water supplies are the natural rivers and streams if you’re really get ting away from it all. Just re member to use water purifi cation pills and the water should be perfectly healthy. The pills do tend to have an odd taste though, so some Kool-Aid would be good to sweeten it. Bringing your own drinks on a long backpacking trip can get hazardously heavy. And lastly, when you’re go ing camping or doing any thing outdoors, try to leave everything just as you found it, with no cigarette butts or cans in behind you. Bring a trash bag for your garbage, and an empty soda bottle is convenient for holding dis carded cigarette butts. For the fishing and diving lover, Little River in the Myrtle Beach area will have a special appeal in April, when a new barge that will attract fish is opened. rCCampus Recreation I ^ *0mversity of South Oavwhua f
