use BRIEFS SG votes not to count Sept. 11 attendance In a unanimous decision on Wednesday, Student Government voted not to count any class attendance records for Sept. 11 because of the great effects of that day’s terrorist attacks. While some students knew people involved in the attacks, others were simply shocked and frightened. The proposal should also include students who weren’t able to attend classes because of flight cancellations. Student Government plans to take the decision to President Palms and his staff for a vote. Incubator applications being accepted Applications for the four open Student Business Incubator Center spots are due by October 10th. The Office of Student Government and Student Organizations distributes the applications, which are available at www.sg.sc.edu and Russell House room 110. Oceanographer to speak at Coker Dr. John Delaney, a University of Washington oceanographer, will speak at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, in room 211 of the Coker Life Sciences Building, as part of USC’s ongoing marine science seminar series. Delaney will discuss his work on the NEPTUNE project, a fiber optic network that uses Internet communications to link sensors with sensor networks in the Pacific Ocean. Associations meet to discuss area safety The'University Neighborhood Association will join with USC, the Five Points Association, the National Advocacy Center and the city to determine how to improve safety in the area between the main university campus and Five Points. SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Miss S.C. finishes in top 20 BY GINNY THORNTON THE GAMECOCK Miss South Carolina Jeanna Raney finished among the top ' 20 contestants in Saturday's Miss America pageant, held in Atlantic City, N. J. Miss Oregon Katie Harman was crowned as Miss America 20Q2. Raney, crowned Miss South Carolina in July, would be a third-year business student at USC, but she will not attend classes during the 2001-2002 aca demic year because of her Miss South Carolina duties. During her reign, Raney will attend speaking engagements and present her platform, teen suicide prevention. The suicide of Raney's mother in 1999 influ enced her decision to teach oth ers about its warning signs and prevention. A native of Inman, S.C., Raney arrived in Atlantic City on Sept. 6 with her 50 fellow contestants to practice and pre pare for the pageant. "I treat it like a full-time job," she said. "Because that's what it is." Housing and with other universi ty officials and promoting cultural diversity, intellectual exchange and artistic expression. Contracts of three to four years are available. The position’s bene fits include an appropriate salary supplement, release from certain teaching duties, residential quar ters in the Principal’s Lodge, re served parking, financial support for meals and an incidental budget. Hal French compared the job to working for the Semester at Sea program. French, a faculty associ ate at Preston and chairman of the search committee, worked for the Semester at Sea program, in which the faculty and students live to gether and interact more than they do in a typical university setting. Ken Perkins says whoever re ceives the position should “sit back and enjoy the ride and take advan tage of this unique experience. ” Barnette has some advice for the next principal. “Don’t be afraid to have your own vision [ofPreston],” he said. Preston College was established in 1995 as a residential college., Kevin and Becky Lewis were the first principals, followed b^Ken and Margaret Perkins.
