Last year, the Clemson placekicker was in the same situation, albeit it in real life, and drilled the game-winning field goal for the Tigers, lifting them to victory over their arch rival. But luckily for the Gamecocks, Hunt horribly misfired this time around on PlayStation, and Carolina came out of Williams-Brice Stadium with a 17-16 win. Hunt seemingly stubbed his toe on the 43-yard attempt and kicked the ball wide left and way short. “I don’t know what the hell happened out there,” said Timothy Semon, head coach of the cyber Tigers. “I think that was the absolute worst kick I’ve ever seen.” lripp Krogaon, neaa coacn or tne Gamecocks, was relieved, admitting he thought the worst when the Tigers marched down the field in almost identical style to last season’s game. “I definitely thought [Hunt] was gonna drill it,” Brogdon said. “I wasn’t being pessimistic, just realistic.” Saturday’s win was Carolina’s first against Clemson in five years. USC last defeated the Tigers in 1996. “1 reckon I don’t care one darned bit about the loss,” Semon said, alluding to his team’s record against the Gamecocks. “We can’t win them all. I’ll take four out of five (games) any day of the week.” Brogdon insisted that beating Clemson wasn’t a fluke, and hinted at future Gamecock dominance in the series. “Let’s just say we’ll be starting a streak of our own,” he said. Brogdon and the Gamecocks surprised Clemson from the start Saturday, coming out in a wishbone offense, a far cry from their normal spread attack. “I wanted to come out and totally surprise the Clemson defense,” Brogdon said. “The wishbone was the only way to do that.” USC piled up 244 yards of offense, despite only having the ball for seven minutes of the entire game. Quarterback Phil Petty led the team with two touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Andrew Pinnock. With the score tied at 10 in the fourth quarter, Petty found a wide-open Pinnock in the end zone from 39 yards out. Pinnock was running a delayed route out of the backfield that left the Tiger defenders scratching their heads. a _i_i :ri__ _i._ _i.. &_t _i_ 11 iiw muu^iii picxjr mu ixxvrwjr, Brogdon said he didn’t. “Clemson is just a bunch of morons and left [Pinnock] wide open,” he said. The Tigers answered with a touchdown of their own minutes later to tight end Chad Doofus, but instead of kicking the extra point to tie, Senion called for a two-point conversion. The attempt failed when Woody Dantzler’s pass went over the head of Rod Gardner. “Looking back, maybe that was slightly ambitious,” Senion said. “But I figured Gardner was the Gamecock killer, so I went for the lead” Dantzler had a tough time dealing with the Gamecock defense. He was sacked four times in the game and had trouble finding open 17 16 ‘Let’s just say we’ll be starting a streak of our own.’ Tripp Brogdon USC video game head coach receivers all day, finishing with only six completions. “Yeah, Dantzler sucked today, but he’s a Heisman-caliber player,” Senion said. “I would never think of pulling him out.” Clemson backup Willie Simmons scored earlier on a fake field goal attempt that gave Clemson a 10-7 lead in die first half, but Petty’s touchdown pass to Derek Watson in the third quarter tied the game. Witson also had 51 yards rushing. Jermale Kelly led all receivers on the day with five catches for 102 yards. Gardner, the “Gamecock killer” who had made deciding \ plays in the teams’ last two meetings, had only one catch for 40 yards. The two teams will take the field for real next fall, Nov. 17, at the real Wiliams-Brice Stadium. Brogdon and Senion will go back to playing Madden 2001 on PlayStation 2. DNA tests performed on the two USC student-athletes Saturday provided concrete proof that the two do in fact share the same garnet blood. “The tests have shown that it’s a 99.9 percent chance that Ryan and Drew are twin brothers,” said Dr. Phil Chauncey of Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. “That pretty much sums it up right there. “1 don’t know how it’s been covered up for so long, but we now know the truth, and tliat's all that matters.” According to sources, the two twin superstars are the offspring of Big Spur, USC’s former mascot who retired in 1980. Big Spur is also the father of Cocky, USC’s current mascot. “Big Spur was quite the ladies’ man,” one source said. “Before he married, he had a lot of female friends, and those MEYER BREWER females weren’t always cliickens. In his heyday, Big Spur liked to spread the love to other species, humans included.” The human mother’s identity is unknown, but sources have ruled out Carol Meyer and Momma Brewer, claiming they actually adopted their sons in 1981. “Big Spur and the twins’ true biological mother decided to give the babies up for adoption 20 years ago,” said a source. “How or why they were split up in the adoption process is anyone’s guess.” Meyer, a sophomore shortstop for Carolina’s baseball -* Twins see page 2,001 More violations found at UK ■ Coaches gave Jared Lorenzen 550 snacky cakes to play for team BY K E R P A L The Gamecock Things continue to get worse for Kentucky. Below is a transcript of the tape: Kentucky: “... OK, Jared Lorenzen of Ft. He couldn’t be reached for comment, but that’s probably because he couldn’t get off his fat ass to get the phone. Dusty Bonner, UK’s previous qu;irtcrback ;uid now a player at I-AA Valdosta State, wouldn’t comment on the situation, aside from uncontrolkiblc laughter. Comments on the tape regarding Lorenzen’s pet cat stealing his pot pie appear to be unrelated to the investigation. Odom, who became head coach at Carolina only weeks ago, signed Dunbar High School’s Fred Chandler to play for USC starting in the 2001-02 season. Chandler is widely regarded as the nation’s top shooting guard after leading Dunbar to four consecutive state titles. He averaged 39.9 points over four years at Dunbar, a school in Baltimore, Md. He also averaged 12 rebounds, 16.3 assists and 9.9199 steals per game. i can i wan 10 get aown to Carolina and score both on and off the court,” Chandler said. “I’ve heard stories about Five Points, and I might have to make a summer trip. “I can’t wait to light up everyone in the SEC. It should be a piece of cake.” Chandler’s presence will most likely bump Jamel Bradley to the power forward position. Over his four years in high school, Chandler scored more than 100 points in five games. His career-high was 146 points versus St. Patrick’s of Jehovah’s Witnesses Temple during his senior season. Chandler isn’t only a star athlete — he also excels in the classroom. Nicknamed the “Vanilla Flash” by teammates, Chandler scored a 1600 on the SAT and was graduated from Dunbar with a 4.2 grade point average. “Fred was a pleasure to have both in and out of class,” said Chandler’s history teacher. John Elsen. “When he wasn’t on the court breaking ankles, he was in the library studying nuclear physics or something ridiculous like that.” Chandler said he can’t wait to play with Marius Pctravicius. “We’re going to he the next Stockton mid Malone,” Chiuidlcr said. “Except I’m gonna get all the points — and the assists, 1(H).” When asked wliy he chose Carolina over schools such as Boh Jones, Furman and Moiitiuia Stale, Chiuidlcr said it was all about the mascot. “Cocky is one bad mamma-jamma,” Photo Illustration by Ansel Adams USC’s newest recruit, Fred “Vanilla Rash” Chandler, has a 82-inch vertical leap and uses it to dunk the crap out of people. Chandler said. Odom couldn’t be readied for comment, but a team source said lie is ecstatic to have signed a player of Chandler’s caliber. “Odom was so happy he pooped his pants,” the source said. “Or so I heard.” Chandler also said a school worthy of a Playboy centerfold was good cm High for him. “There’s nothing but ghetto hoochics here in Baltimore,” Chandler said. "Homicide doesn't even start to describe the scum that lives on these inner-city streets. 1 need me some good loving.” Chandler is confident that he can turn around USC’s struggling program. “The V;uiilla Flash is gonna knock their socks oil,” he said. “Whoosh!” The sports desk aui ’(be reached at 9 gamecocksports@hotmaiLcom
