Bouknight pitched a no-hitter for 7 2/3 innings against the Volunteers, giving up back-to-back singles in the eighth inning of the Gamecocks 6-0 win. In the contest, only three Volunteer batters reached second base, and none reached third. The right-hander from Gaston struck out seven batters, giving him 390 hits for his career. He needs two more strikeouts to break the school record for career strikeouts, which is held by Earl Bass, who pitched from 1972-75. With the win, Bouknight moved to 5-0 on the year, with a 4.17 ERA. ■ Duke takes another Lady Gamecock title Top-ranked Duke, down by two strokes to 11 th-ranked Georgia entering the day, posted a team score of 296 to win last weekend’s Lady Gamecock Classic. The five-stroke win over the Lady Bulldogs was Duke's fourth-straight LGC title and the fifth in the last six years. LSU, Wake Forest and host USC rounded out the top five on the par-72, 5,996-yard course. The title was Duke's sixth in the history of the event, but it came in much closer fashion that the previous three ' titles. Georgia held the lead after each of the first two rounds, but the Lady Bulldogs' four-point lead was split to two after 36 holes, with Duke running away down the stretch. The Lady Blue Devils finished with a three-day 887 — the second lowest team score in Lady Gamecock Classic history. Carolina shot a three-round 936 to finish in fifth place. v The Lady Gamecocks were led by sophomore All-America candidate Kristy McPherson Sunday. McPherson had a 4 over 76 and finished with a three-day total of 222. USC sophomores Kacy Thompson and junior Sarah Kidd had identical 79s Sunday and finished in a tie for 24th place at 237. Geoigia's Angela Jerman, who shot a 219, won the individual title in a playoff with LSU’s Katy Harris. Harris' 12-foot putt missed for par on the first playoff hole, giving Jerman the victory. ■ Softball tops MSU Juniors Adrianna Baggetta and Megan Matthews provided the offense and defense, respectively, to lead No. 17 Carolina over Mississippi State, 2-0, on Sunday. With the win, Carolina took the weekend’s three-game series two games to one. * USC has now won both of its SEC three-game sets. The Lady Gamecocks move to 20-10-1,4-2 in the SEC, while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 14-16, 2-4 in the conference. USC’s Debralee Troesh, who was 2 3 on the day, opened the sixth inning with an infield single and was replaced by Nancy Crane on the base paths. Baggetta then launched a triple to deep center, scoring Crane from first. The rally continued with Amber Curtis hitting a single up the middle to score Baggetta easily. On the mound, Matthews (11-6) was tough once again, taking atio-hitter into the seventh. Matthews retired the first two batters on strikeouts before All American Kellie Wilkerson played spoiler with a double to right center. MSU starter Jennifer Pursell (6-8) allowed two runs on seven Lady Gamecock hits to take the loss for Mississippi State. Pursell was the winner in MSU’s 1-0 win on Saturday. Carolina takes the week off from games to prepare for a three-game set with No. 8 LSU next weekend in Columbia Last season, Carolina went 2 1 against the Tigers. ■ Men’s tennis wins fourth straight match USC’s men’s tennis rolled to its fourth consecutive win today, emerging victorious over the Charlotte 49ers, 4-3. The match was held indoors at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility due to inclement weather conditions. Senior Guillaume Legal, ranked 80th in the ITAAVingspan.com poll, took his sixth victory in as many matches over Ola Jonsson at No. 1 singles. He was assisted by his teammates with wins at No. 3,5 and 6 singles.
