Regardless of who gets the better of

“Wfe’re a defensive team; that’s what
got us here,” David Sanders said.
The Rebels were 11th in the SEC
in scoring, but first in the league in
scoring defense.
The Kentucky-Southern Cal game

Elsewhere around the SEC:
Tennessee: Following a disappointing
2000-01 campaign, Tennessee’s Jerry
Green resigned Tuesday as head coach
I
of the men’s basketball team.
The Vols advanced to the Sweet 16
of the NCAA Tournament last season
and entered this season with lofty
expectations that they failed to live up
to. After starting the year 16-1 and being
ranked No. 4 in the nation, Tennessee
took a nose dive in SEC play. The Vols
finished with a record of 8-8 in the
conference and lost in the first round of
the NCAA Tournament to Charlotte.
Tennessee athletics director Doug
Dickey made the announcement of
Green’s resignation at a news conference
Tuesday. Green didn’t attend, but issued
a statement.
“This ends an emotional time for
me because I have never before left
where I felt that my work was
incomplete,” Green said.

Missouri’s sports information
director, Chad Moller, wouldn’t

permission to talk to Snyder.
Snyder has taken Missouri to the
NCAA Tournament in both of his
years as head coach there. Two
seasons ago, he was named National
Rookie Coach of the Year by

■ Bouknight named
SEC Player of Week
USC senior pitcher Kip Bouknight
was chosen as the SEC Player of the Week
on Monday for his performance against
Tennessee last Friday night.
Bouknight pitched a no-hitter for 7
2/3 innings against the Volunteers, giving
up back-to-back singles in the eighth
inning of the Gamecocks 6-0 win.
In the contest, only three Volunteer
batters reached second base, and none
reached third. The right-hander from
Gaston struck out seven batters, giving
him 390 hits for his career. He needs two
more strikeouts to break the school record
for career strikeouts, which is held by
Earl Bass, who pitched from 1972-75.
With the win, Bouknight moved to
5-0 on the year, with a 4.17 ERA.

an infield single and was replaced by
Nancy Crane on the base paths. Baggetta
then launched a triple to deep center,
scoring Crane from first. The rally
continued with Amber Curtis hitting a
single up the middle to score Baggetta
easily.
On the mound, Matthews (11-6) was
tough once again, taking atio-hitter into
the seventh. Matthews retired the first
two batters on strikeouts before All

■ Men’s tennis wins
fourth straight match
USC’s men’s tennis rolled to its fourth
consecutive win today, emerging
victorious over the Charlotte 49ers, 4-3.
The match was held indoors at the USC
Indoor Tennis Facility due to inclement
weather conditions.
Senior Guillaume Legal, ranked 80th
in the ITAAVingspan.com poll, took his
sixth victory in as many matches over
Ola Jonsson at No. 1 singles. He was
assisted by his teammates with wins at
No. 3,5 and 6 singles. David Nelson won
over Joakin Peterson, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3
singles, and Carl Wermee and Rodrigo
Pacheco followed suit, each disposing of
his Charlotte opponent with little trouble.

the third doubles match behind
PachecoAVemiee, but Charlotte won the
first two and earned the doubles point to
take an early 1-0 lead.
Die Gamecocks will play host to SEC
opponents Kentucky at 2 p.m. Friday at
the Sam Daniel Tennis Center and look
to keep the winning streak alive.
