When you’re riding in a van with other people for 11 or 15 hours, you’ll have time to get to know them. At the sites, there will be stu dents from all over the country. It will be a chance to see what’s out there in the world,” she said. Miller added, “It gives students a sense of perspective. There’s so much out there that they have never been exposed to. I’ve been on three trips like this as an adviser. Sometimes they don’t know what to expect at first, but I’ve found that they come back with a better idea of what they want to do in life. Maybe they realize that they haven’t been getting all they can out of life...it’s a real learning experience. We’re obviously very passionate about this.” Hackney said student leaders will participate in extensive leadership train ing programs. “We want them to learn team-building, conflict resolution, cri sis- management—those kind of skills,” she said. “The leaders will also attend a stu dent leadership training conference on Feb. 3, along with students from oth er universities.” This will be senior Edward Ben der’s first year participating in Alter native Spring Break. “I thought about doing it in the past but didn’t really pursue it. This year, some of my friends are gong to Jamaica. It might have been a fun thing to do, but I didn’t have the $700 logo.” After considering his options, Ben der decided to go with the Heifer Pro ject International in Massachusetts. “I’m very excited about doing this. I want to do something to help out. I can’t think of a more productive way to spend spring break. And I’ve nev er been to Boston. I can’t wait to see Fenway Park.” Miller said there are still a limited number of spots available for those who want to participate. “Students need to give a $75 deposit. After the spots fill up, we’ll have a waiting list in case people have to drop out.” The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecockspotiight@hotmail.com. *EUJS from page 8 pus community to take control of its environment. “Some people think police are meant to prevent all crimes. But some community members need to stop crime before it happens,” he says. Ellis’ suggestion for students is simple: “Be aware.” “Close and lock your doors, keep your valuables out of sight in your room and in your car, and just be aware of your surroundings,” he says. Jason Forsythe, the department’s accreditation manager, says Ellis’ greatest strength is his personality. “[He has] the ability to motivate people and get along with them and still see that they get everything done,” Forsythe says. Forsythe also credited Ellis’ de votion to campus safety. “If anything happens here on campus, he is notified of it, and if he’s in town, he’ll be right there be side the officers,” Forsythe says. Ellis gives full credit to his staff for the work he has been able to do. “A friend of mine once said this was like seeing a duck glide across the water. ...[Y]ou don’t see the feet constantly moving underwater,” El lis says. “That’s the way I feel about my staff. I’m very fortunate to have the staff I work with.” The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecockspotlight@hotmaiLcom. * Spotlight congratulates ‘ Brock Vergakis for being named editor in chief for Spring 2001.
