“Che ©amtcock Shakespeare group to perform ‘Heniy V’ by Kamille Bostick The Gamecock The S.C. Shakespeare Company will present “Henry V” Friday at Finlay Park. In keeping with its commitment to provide state residents with delightful Shakespeare tales and the entertainment and escape of the theater, the company will once again bring the script to the stage under the direction of Linda Khoury. “Henry V” is a tale about courage and the ability of the human spirit to over come any obstacle. Shakespeare captures the struggles that the young king, thrust upon the throne at a young age, must face in order to be come a competent leader who can make difficult decisions and earn the loyalty of his subjects. Henry’s story is one for the history books and for literature as he led his army to one of the most stunning and unex pected victories ever. Staged at the Finlay Park Ampithe atre, where natural surroundings and sets meet, this performance of Henry V will be unique. The production features the classi cally-trained members of the Shakespeare Company, who have practiced and per fected their skills in internationally-ac claimed arenas, as well as seasoned ac tors from the Columbia area. The cast includes Scott Blanks in the title role, Thomas Dalton as the chorus, Gene Aimone as the Dauphin, Jayce Trontsness as Falstaf, Joyceln Sanders as Exeter, Houston McMillion as King Charles of France, Richard Purday as Llewelyn, Michael Hart as Westmore land, Greg Maillol as Buigundy and Shan non Helton as Katherine. Joining the director and the cast in the presentation are scenic designer El lis Pryce-Jones from the University of Nevada and fight choreographer Evan Parry from the College of Charleston. The company will be performing James Goldman’s “The Lion in Winter” this December. Show dates for Henry V are Oct. 13 15,17-18 and 20-21. All shows are free, but a $2 donation is suggested. Wavefest from page 6 pop bands on the bill to have some thing for everyone.” Concert fans won’t have to wait long between band intervals since there will be two stages set up side-by-side in the center field. “The only wait period people will have to endure will be the DJ thank ing the last band and introducing the next band,” Oomens said. Wavefest started in 1990 as part of a concert effort by Jimmy Buffet to raise money after Hurricane Hugo stormed through the Lowcountry, Oomens said. The annual concert day was either free or priced low for the crowds, which became a financial burden for the radio station in 1997, when the crowds didn’t cover the cost of the festival. “We lost money the last two years we had Wavefest, which dried up our budget for 1998, and we couldn’t do it in 1999 since we were being bought by another company,” Oomens said. “We covered our charities, but it set us back and we didn’t know if Charleston wanted a Wavefest any more.” Instead of donating ticket proceeds to a specific charity, the city will do nate parking profits to charities, in cluding Big Brother and Big Sister. Sponsors for Wavefest include Sticky Fingers Restaurant, Budweiser, Carta, SunCom, The Post and Courier, Cat’s Music, Player’s Place and Comcast. Tickets for Wave Fest are $24 in advance at all Suncom locations or call (888) 202-ETIX. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the show at the gates for $28. The River Dogs Stadi um gates will open at 3 p.m. The spotlight desk can be reached at' gamecockspotiight@hotmail.com. Sol from page 6 songs, such as their love ballad “Felt Like a Fool,” which evoked a melodi ous, rich mixture of instruments and voices. The band also appealed to fans by performing a noted rendition of the Counting Crows’ song “Rain King,” although Spencer didn’t have the same deep sound and ability of changing pitch as Adam Duritz. Most of the songs were pleasing to the ear and capable of an aesthetical ly pleasing musical symmetry, but they started to blend together, a problem for many alternative pop rock bands. “They’re good for an outdoor event like Five After Five, but they aren’t really unique because they sound like another Matchbox 20 band,” ad vertising senior Ellen Robinson said. “But they’re definitely a step forward for Columbia as far as getting more lo cal bands out to play.” Spencer said their main concern is to promote their CD, which was re leased in May, and play throughout the Southeast, from Virginia to Florida. “We’ve only officially been Blind ing Sol since May, so our priority is getting our new music out there to the public and just using this new image,” Spencer said. Except for Joal, all the members are alumni of USC. Blinding Sol will play in Columbia Oct. 28 at Gillian’s as part of a Halloween bash.
