Xtic (Bamccock Men’s soccer defeats College of Charleston ■ Ring named to Soccer America *Team of the Week by Kyle Almond The Gamecock The South Carolina men’s soccer team won its third straight game Wednesday night, blanking the College of Charleston 2-0. Two freshmen scored for the Gamecocks, who improved their record to 4-1 with the win. The Cougars dropped to 2-2-1. Ryan Daley scored the first goal of the game at the 29:51 mark. The freshman for ward from Modesto, Calif, took a cross from sophomore David Testo and scored his first goal of the regular season. Daley had scored two goals in the pre-season IPFW Soccer Showcase against Akron and Saint Louis. ^ The score remained 1-0 at halftime, de spite College of Charleston out-shooting the Gamecocks 6-5 in the first half. However, in the second half, South Car olina became much more offensive! They out-shot the Cougars 8-3 in the last 45 min utes and held off the Cougars for the win. Freshman midfielder Robert Rosenborg added the insurance goal for the Gamecocks, drilling a shot from the left corner of the box to beat the Cougar goalkeeper. The goal, Rosenborg’s first of his South Carolina ca reer, was unassisted. USC goalkeeper Henry Ring recorded his second straight shut-out of the season, improving his goals against average to 0.80 for the season. A former All-American, Ring finished the 1998 season with a 0.72 GAA, fifth-best in South Carolina history. For his performance at last weekend’s Maryland Soccer Classic, Ring was recently named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. The redshirt senior allowed only one goal in two wins over No. 1 Virginia and No. 8 Maryland. He also recorded 19 saves en route to being named Defensive Most Valuable Player for the tournament. With their recent winning streak, the Gamecocks have catapulted to the top 10 of the NSC A A poll. The Gamecocks moved up 12 spots to No. 10 after being No. 22 last week. Through five games this season, the Gamecocks have scored eight goals while only allowing four. In addition to wins over Virginia, Maryland, and Charleston, USC has also defeated UMass. Their lone loss came at the hands of UNC-Charlotte, who squeaked past the Gamecocks 2-1 at the "Graveyard". The Gamecocks, who have played their last three matches on the road, return to Co lumbia to play their next game. USC will take on Virginia Tech Sunday in the Lorick Office Products Kickoff Classic. The game will be the second part of a doubleheader with the women’s soccer team. Women’s soccer falls to Davidson Things continue to get worse for the South Carolina women’s soccer team. A week after losing defender Melinda Carter for the season with a leg injury, the Gamecocks fell to 0-6 with a loss at David son. Junior midfielder Lydia Bienias gave the Gamecocks an early lead in the 24th minute, but Davidson tied the game up less than 10 minutes later and South Carolina failed to respond. Davidson’s Danielle Erikson scored the game-winning goal at the 64:46 mark. With the loss, USC is off to its worst start in six years.
