(The (Bamecock Football from page 13 ing opposition. “We need to come out ready to play. We need to come out hard,” Petty concluded. Defensively, Eastern Michigan enters the ballgame with a load of experience at linebacker. Returning to , the middle of the defense are Scott Russell and Jason Short, who are both third-year starters and finished with 105 and 97 tackles, respectively. The defensive front should be a challenge as well, since the Eagles return four players with experience from a year ago. Back up front will be James Turner, Nik Buck meier, Jari Brown and Jermaine Kyles. “They are really big as far as defense. They are com parable to Georgia as far as size. We’re going to have to be aggressive to come out on top,” Paige said. Even with a game looming next week with SEC foe Mississippi State, the Gamecocks refuse look past EMU. “Every win is great. We’re focused on Saturday and then we’ll worry about other teams in the future,” Paige said. “We are going to keep moving on. We have a long way to go to break even.” “Our focus has not changed. We still want to work hard, focus and come in with intensity every game. More importantly, we want to win,” Petty said. Georgia won’t be join ing that list this year. An ugly 21-10 loss to South Carolina, the Game cocks’ first SEC win since 1997, sent the Bulldogs (1 1 overall, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) plummeting to 23rd in The Associated Press poll, down from No. 9 a Week before. Even worse, preseason expectations of champi onships and national recog nition seemingly were torn down along with the goal posts at South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium. Or were they? With nine games re maining on the schedule, including a home game with Tennessee and a trip to Jacksonville to meet Florida, Georgia could con ceivably run the table in the SEC and win the Eastern Divisicjn crown. “We’re not looking at running the table now, (but) obviously that’s something we want to do,” said quar terback Quincy Carter. “We’ve got to continue to look toward our goals and play hard. The season’s not lost.” There is a recent prece dent for such a comeback. Last year, Alabama lost at home to heavy underdog Louisiana Tech, reported ly putting coach Mike Du Bose’s job in danger. But the Crimson Tide won eight of its last 10 games, including a 34-7 dis mantling of Florida in the SEC title game. “We may be the laugh ingstock of the SEC right now, but we know how hard we’ve worked to get ready for this season,” said offensive tackle Jonas Jen nings. “Now we’ve got to go out and shock some peo ple.” The Bulldogs have the offensive weapons for an Alabama-like run to finish the season, but Carter will have to be better than he was against South Caroli na. He threw five intercep tions, including two on the opening plays of separate possessions, and Georgia’s high-powered offense man aged just 287 yards. Carter also was called for a personal foul when he slammed Gamecock de fensive back Andre Good man to the ground out of bounds after Goodman’s 70-yard interception return. “We let the crowd get to us a little bit and we lost our poise,” Georgia coach Jim Donnan said of Carter’s penalty, and a similar one later in the game against linebacker Kendrell Bell. “We’ve got too much ex perience to let that happen.” Next up for Georgia is a nonconference contest with New Mexico State, a game that earlier in the sea- , son looked like an easy win. But at this point, the Bull dogs can ill-afford to over look anybody. “We’ve got to put all the negative stuff with the loss behind us, and we’ve got to move ahead,” Jen nings said. “We’ve got to come in with a focused mind against New Mexico State, because you don’t want to go through a loss like that again.” Special to The Gamecock Georgia players try to stay positive on the sideline during the South Carolina game last Saturday. use GRADUTION FAIR FOR DECEMBER GRADUATES THE RUSSELL HOUSE BOOKSTORE AND THE BALFOUR COMPANY ANNOUNCE ORDER DATES FOR CAPS, GOWNS, TASSELS AND GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!
