Generic vs. name-brand shampoos by Amanda Craven The Gamecock Have you ever wondered what the difference between salon shampoo and regular store bought shampoo is? There is probably more of a difference be tween them than you think. Many people believe that the on ly differences between salon shampoo and store bought shampoo is the smell, the place that you buy them, and the price. Those are all true differences, but did you know that they contain many different ingredients as well? Almost all shampoos contain spe cific ingredients, like proteins such as Keratin, Collagen or Silk Pro-vita mins. They also contain precursors like Panthenol or ProVB5 which give hair benefits like increased shine and softness. One of the most important ingredients that shampoos contain are surfactants or surface active agents which are the cleaners. Shampoos also contain lather builders. Shampoos that are bought from stores contain ingredients for con ditioning to provide manageability. Shampoos used in salons usually do not because they are designed to prepare the hair for further works such as perms and colors. Salon shampoos are better at rinsing oil and build-up away. They also leave the scalp cleaner. Most people do not realize that wa- • ter is the main cleaning agent for the hair and the use of shampoo on the hair helps the water clean more effective •y Salon shanjpoos are a lot more cost ly than store bought shampoos because of the difference in their ingredients. The average cost of a bottle of sa lon shampoo is between $15 and $25 and sometimes even more and the average price of shampoos bought from a store is between $4 and $10. Most people use store bought shampoo because it is a lot less ex pensive than salon shampoo, but there are a lot of people who prefer to use salon brands. The most popular salon sham poos are Paul Mtchell and Redken. The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecockspotJight@hotmail.com.
