Che (Bamecock Crew from page 9 background. Ouch, conjugal visit with stripper Ferris (a typecast Jennifer Tilly) by breaking out his ab-roller for a few moments of heavy breathing. The end of the movie is worth mentioning, too, without spoil ing it. If the upbeat finale were not so promising and fun, any remembrance of the film would be flat. Flat it is not, however, because Pepper Lowenstein, played by Uanie Kazan, takes over the show in the final half-hour, thus renovating the gravel from the first hour and a half into a paved way to the promising end. Pepper is a gas with her New Jersey accent and Miami Beach ideals. Pepper is also the soundtrack per sonified. Upbeat, bright, and tourist Florida with a flair are descriptions of both Pepper and the music. Such songs as “Mambo Italiano” spice up the film and the Latin influence in such songs like “El Ritmo de La Noche” and “Es Tu Cumpleanos” are indicative of the Cuban-American environment. In an embarrassing recognition, at one low point (to say the least) in “The Crew,” during what could be consid ered a chase scene, the music from Nin tendo’s “Super Mario Brothers 3“ (where the bombs are popping out from the ship’s base), seems to synchronize with the bouncing convertible top dri ven by three of the geezers. A scary thought, but the Nintendo music was not cited. Phew. Hedaya’s 1998 “Dick,-” a light spoof on the Watergate scandal, was bad in its own right, but in comparison to “The Crew,” it has the stature of the well received and smart 1995 “Clueless” when critically compared to the fun, but lame, 1999 “Ten Things 1 Hate About You.” “The Crew” is certainly not the worst comedy out there, but its previews might have been a bit mis leading: This movie is not one based on content and polish with an overload of one-liners as seen in “The First Wives Club”, but instead one that is fully cen tered on quippy moments and hopeful puns. Yes, it overuses such horrid movie mob slang like “fogettaboutit,” “mook,” “skaroots,” and “schmootz,” but this movie proves that there indeed is a place for that in Hollywood. It was simply anti-climactic to see them spouted by Reynolds and Dreyfuss, gems of another era. Waiting for the RHA movie chan nel to pick it up is one option, but for a rainy day and a stressed out mind, “The Crew” could be that key to en during the first full week of school and sharing some low-maintenance come dy along the way. Area Bi-Lo seeks to attract customers through new Gamecock themed store by Chris tilley The Gamecock Students bought their books from die official Gamecock bookstore, as well as their official Gamecock pens, pen cils, stationary, bumper stickers, and ap parel. But where does a loyal Game cock fan go for groceries? Ramesh Prasad, the manager of the Bi-Lo supermarket on Devine Street, is pioneering the first efforts to have more University themed shopping in the area. Over the summer, the Bi-Lo has been undergoing a facelift, both in ternally and externally, that will result in the area’s first Gamecock-themed grocery store. The store already has a new sign with a Gamecock logo sandwiched in between the “Bi” and “Lo” and USC logos are painted on almost every wall. But the renovations are not limited to cosmetic improvements. The store will have a new produce department, a new pharmacy, a bank, and a deli style cafe called “Cockadoo’s” which will high light the various academic departments of the University, as well as emphasize According to Prasad, the grand open ing of this new and improved super market will be the second week in November. Despite the construction signs, the Bi-Lo is still open during ren ovations and the deli should be open be fore the grand opening. Bi-Lo, a Spartanburg-based compa ny, is hoping the thematic grocery stores will help increase the student customer base in selected college cities. “We’ve done'a similar concept in Clemson, Ten nessee, and [the University of] Georgia that has been really well received,” Prasad said. The loyalty of the students is of great importance to Prasad and the employ ees of his supermarket, which lies on ly three miles away from the campus. “We have a very strong student cus tomer base, “ Prasad said. “When the kids go home for summer, we lose quite a bit of business.” According to Prasad, there will be additional ties to the University. The new Bi-Lo also plans on advertising with The Gamecock. There is also going to be a Bi-Lo tent at football games which will provide detailed information about the store and what kind of specials and discounts will be available for the stu dents. Prasad encourages students to come in and sign up for a Bi-Lo Bonus Card for extra discounts and to be automati cally registered for prizes and giveaways.
