Rachel cited the pope as an example, saying he’s the dominant figure in the Catholic system. She identified four women in the Catholic faith who she believes are role models: the Virgin Mary, Joan of Arc, Mother Teresa and Dorothy Kazel, a per sonal figure from her hometown who was murdered while serving as a missionary in El Salvador. Susan Aude Fisher represented the Bahai faith. Only 156 years old, the Bahai faith is the newest denomination of Christian re ligion. According to Fisher, Bahai stresses the “essential oneness of all major reli gions.” Unlike other religions, the young faith of 6 million believers has managed to re main united diroughout its history, avoid ing division and sects. Great emphasis is placed on the equal ity of men and women, as Bahais believe that gender equality is the key to world peace, Fisher said. The goal is to foster unity witliin the family in order to promote equality be tween men and women. Baha’u’llah, the founder of the Bahai faith, uiges the followers to “avoid poli tics like the plague,” Fisher said. In general, this religion abstains from active involvement in politics. However, they’re officially recog nized by the United Nations for their work done to benefit world peace and human rights. Victoria Keaton represented the idea of nondenominational Christianity. “I think I am a Christian, but most Christians don’t think so,” she said. Keaton centers her spiritual life on the teachings of St. Jermaine. According to Keaton, those teachings are “not to judge, criticize or condemn any part of life.” In relation to women being repre sented in her faith, Keaton said the female deities outnumber the males, adding that she incorporates aspects of different re ligions into her own views. Her faith isn’t politically active, as it views everyone only as spirits, not as men and women. National Women’s History Month of ficially begins later this month. Fellowships and Summer Programs Assistant Director Jan Phillips agreed with Hem. “There are so many benefits to the process of applying - self reflection and clarification of one’s future plans, plus better preparation for both job applica tions and graduate school applications,” Phillips said. Beginning in late March and contin uing until late April, the office will offer spring scholarship workshops. Each one will focus on a particular scholarship and last for 45 minutes. Luna said South Quad East should at tract more students to live on campus. “When we provide the right housing, we find students prefer to live on cam pus,” Luna said. Besides residence hall construction, Housing is also planning a number of ren ovations. This summer, those plans include up grading all residence-hall computer labs, renovating and refurnishing Bates West, and painting and putting new carpet in Douglas and Snowden. Other plans in clude the addition of sprinklers in the McBryde Quadrangle and Bates West. The completion of South Quad East marks (Jie second pliase of Housing’s three step plan, which will end in 2010. Luna said focus groups are being used to determine which new types of housing students, parents and staff would like to have at USC. Among the various projects under con sideration for the third phase of the pro ject is replacing the Towers, which will likely be tom down within seven years, Luna said. “Ultimately, the Master Plan calls for the Towers to be replaced,” he said.
