Gamecock Sports Jordan from page B1 to turn the Wizard around, but in contrast to his playing days, he will not be able to execute it Joniin is now facing the greatest defend er he has ever gone up against The NBAs salary cap. i Jordan has three aging players that need to be offthat team for him to begin his iebuiking process. Mich Richmond. Juwan Howard Rod Strickland All three of these guys are good NM play ers, but at this point in their careers, they are not the direction that the Wizard need to go. In addition, each of these guys are making in excess of $10 million per year. The Wizards cap is at $52mil]icn this year. What’s the NB\ limit, you might ask? A mere $32 million. So, as you can see, Mchael doesn’t have much room to breathe as far as player move ment goes. He won’t be able to be a player in the Tim Duncan or Grait Hill sweepstakes this sum mer because of youguessed it, Htward Strick land and Richmond The real problem here is that those three are the only real contributors on this team. Richmond lead the team, scoring 16.8 points per game, Howard is second with 14.4 and Strickland contributes 122agame. Richmondalso lead the team in years on this planet He’ll turn 35 this summer. So who does Jordan rebuild around? The most viable canidate is firmer UCom star Richard Hamilton. The rookie is fifth on the team in scoring with eight points a game, but he’s doing rela tively nothing else. So, where should Jordan start? I don’t have the answer to that question The bottom line is, the only teams in the league that could take on the salaries of Rich mond, Howard or Strickland are the Los An geles Clippers and Jordan's former team, the Chicago Bulls. Since the Clippers haven’t brought in a big name in a trade or free agent signing since... okay, well the Clippers haven’t re ally made any effort to bring in anybody that lean think of. So, I guess they’re out I’m sure Jordan could use his magic to move one of those guys to Chicago, but if the Bulls are going to spend money, I think it might be on someone a little bit younger. Look for them to be a player in the Dun can and Hill festivities this summer. When Jordan stepped on the court as a player, he was agod Not God, but a god Time and again, he proved himself to be relatively infallible. Now, as his Wizards lose game after game and dollar after dollar, he will prove to be quite fallible as an executive. Don’t get me wrong. Nothing will ever take away the mystique that Jordan had on the floor, but this move might dent his credi bility for the sole reason that Michael Jordan will lose. Over the next three to four weeks, the Wizards will probably lose more games than Jordan did in one of his select seasons during the championship years. He dees have are thirggarg far him thcqgh He’s not afraid to lose. I&ally, if he can get through Birmingham Baron baseball with his pride. I guess he can get through Washington Wizard basketball. Good luck, MichaeL ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ I Homecoming to be MSU Arizona State's Pat Murphy in fourth and Ciemson’s Jack Leggett in fifth. Also competing for time at first is Troesh’s little sister, De bralee Troesh. She will double as a Game cock catcher in 2000.
