his playing days, he will not be able to execute

Joniin is now facing the greatest defend
er he has ever gone up against
The NBAs salary cap. i
Jordan has three aging players that need
to be offthat team for him to begin his iebuiking
process.
Mich Richmond.
Juwan Howard
Rod Strickland
All three of these guys are good NM play
ers, but at this point in their careers, they are
not the direction that the Wizard need to go.
In addition, each of these guys are making
in excess of $10 million per year.
The Wizards cap is at $52mil]icn this year.
What’s the NB\ limit, you might ask?
A mere $32 million.
So, as you can see, Mchael doesn’t have
much room to breathe as far as player move
ment goes.
He won’t be able to be a player in the Tim
Duncan or Grait Hill sweepstakes this sum
mer because of youguessed it, Htward Strick
land and Richmond
The real problem here is that those three
are the only real contributors on this team.
Richmond lead the team, scoring 16.8
points per game, Howard is second with 14.4
and Strickland contributes 122agame.
Richmondalso lead the team in years on
this planet He’ll turn 35 this summer.
So who does Jordan rebuild around?
The most viable canidate is firmer UCom
star Richard Hamilton.
The rookie is fifth on the team in scoring
with eight points a game, but he’s doing rela
tively nothing else.
So, where should Jordan start?
I don’t have the answer to that question
The bottom line is, the only teams in the
league that could take on the salaries of Rich
mond, Howard or Strickland are the Los An
geles Clippers and Jordan's former team, the
Chicago Bulls.
Since the Clippers haven’t brought in a
big name in a trade or free agent signing
since... okay, well the Clippers haven’t re
ally made any effort to bring in anybody that
lean think of.
So, I guess they’re out
I’m sure Jordan could use his magic to
move one of those guys to Chicago, but if the
Bulls are going to spend money, I think it might
be on someone a little bit younger.
Look for them to be a player in the Dun
can and Hill festivities this summer.
When Jordan stepped on the court as a
player, he was agod
Not God, but a god
Time and again, he proved himself to be
relatively infallible.
Now, as his Wizards lose game after game
and dollar after dollar, he will prove to be quite
fallible as an executive.
Don’t get me wrong. Nothing will ever
take away the mystique that Jordan had on
the floor, but this move might dent his credi
bility for the sole reason that Michael Jordan
will lose.
Over the next three to four weeks, the
Wizards will probably lose more games than
Jordan did in one of his select seasons during
the championship years.
He dees have are thirggarg far him thcqgh
He’s not afraid to lose.
I&ally, if he can get through Birmingham
Baron baseball with his pride. I guess he can
get through Washington Wizard basketball.
Good luck, MichaeL

plete season together since 1997, due to
McCutcheon breaking her leg in 1998
and Hall tearing her anterior cruciate lig- •

The trio will be joined by either
Danielle Quinones or Kate Morrison at
first base, both freshmen eager to make
their collegiate debuts. Also competing
for time at first is Troesh’s little sister, De
bralee Troesh. She will double as a Game
cock catcher in 2000.
Junior Adrienne Genovese will once
again claim the starting catcher spot, stem
ming from her .994 fielding percentage
in 1999, second in the SEC. Genovese
committed only three errors in 70 games.
OUTFIELD
USC will face the most changes in
the outfield, starting with Megan Dona
hoo. A utility infielder in 1999, the ver
satile junior will move to centerfield.
While not on the mound, McMillin
will play right field for Carolina. How
ever, when she is pitching the right spot
will go to senior Jamie Williams, Quinones
or freshman Kim Evans.

talent to make an immediate impact on
the field.
SCHEDULE
USC will begin its season Feb. 11 at
the Fiesta Classic in Phoenix. The Game
cocks open the new year by playing Texas
A&M, Arizona, Fresno State and Arizona
State in three days. Except for A&M,
all of these opponents participated in the
1999 Women’s College World Series.
After a brief four-game homestand
against Georgia State and UNC Charlotte,
Carolina will participate in the Gladstone
Tournament in Tampa Feb. 25-27. The
opponents in the tourney are Indiana,
South Florida, Auburn, Kent State and
Michigan.
USC travels again to North Caroli
na and Auburn before returning to Tam- *
pa to play in the USF/Speedline Classic.
They will face Maryland, Purdue, Con
necticut and Illinois-Chicago in two days
before returning to Columbia for a 10
game homestand.
Before starting home conference play
on March 17 against Florida, USC will
play host to Hofstra and a doubleheader
with Furman. Afterwards, all remaining
games will be doubleheaders.
After four games in two days with the
Lady Gators, USC will play Mississippi
State and Ole Miss before traveling to Al
abama.
The road trip will continue to Ten
nessee and on to Kentucky from March 4
28 to April 8 before coming home to face
1999 SEC regular season and tournament
champ LSU on April 14. The March 31
game against the Lady Vols will be tele
vised by Fox Sports South, USC’s first
T.V. appearance since 1997.
Arkansas and Coastal Carolina pre
sent a small homestand before traveling
to Georgia, and then returning home for
Georgia Southern. USC will close out the
regular season on May 6 at Virginia Tech.
“The SEC will be stronger than last
year,” Compton said. “The games in ear
ly February and March will better pre
pare us. Our early season schedule will
be a good barometer for where we stand
going into conference play.”
