Special io The Gamecock Cabinet from page 9 The SCSA Director is currently be ing appointed by the Student Body Pres ident of USC as a Cabinet member. Dur ing its beginning stages, SCSA is basically being run by USC’s SG until it becomes self-sufficient. This year, the entire ex ecutive board of SCSA consists of USC students: Director David Hill, Assistant Di rectors Katie Taylor and Stephanie Shiv ely, and Director of Media Relations Jeff IWIIIIg, So far, we have held a “President’s Forum” in September for the SG pres idents in South Carolina and discussed issues of relevance to all students in the state that SCSA could work on, includ ing increased funding for higher educa tion, alcohol stipulations of the LIFE scholarship, financial aid issues, perfor mance funding, disclosure of teacher evaluation results, and the possibility of having a student voting member on the Board of Trustees. We are currently working on send ing out letters to all state legislators em phasizing higher education needs and meeting with lobbyists to discuss strate gies we can use with the legislature. At the end of January, we will host the second annual SCSA conference at USC, and hope to have a strong show ing from all colleges in the stale. We are also in the process of re cruiting new members for USC’s SCSA delegation. Wfe are looking for hard working stu dents who are knowledgeable about high er education and want to make a dif ference. Applications are available in the SG office and will be due on Nov. 12. If you have any questions or ideas of issues SCSA could tackle, please con tact us at SCSAUSC@hotmail.com. Director of Special Projects Student Government is working very hard this year to promote special pro jects that will enhance student pride on campus and promote student involve ment. Director of Special Projects Tim othy Clardy is leading this effort. He has challenged SG to accomplish projects that have consistently been on the agendas of past administrations. In an effort to live up to Clardy’s favorite quote, “Don’t sing it; bring it!” SG is committed to completing several major projects this year that have long been on the “to-do” list. rirst, and probably most noticeable of all, was the goal of painting a game cock on Greene Street in front of Rus sell House. Student Government lead ers had to gain the approval of university officials and city council before work could be done. With the help of the Athletic De partment, the gamecock was painted for the first time early last summer. SG re painted the gamecock on Sept. 3 and plans to paint it again during the week before the Clemson/Carolina football game. The gamecock is only the initial i r .i o. • * ii au^cui uicxjicciic jucci piujcvu onirni er USC emblems, filling wilhin one street lane, will be placed facing traffic inside the gates on Greene Street. Clardy is currently considering using the side view of the gamecock claw and spur for this purpose. The emblem must be simple so that several can be painted on the street in a short period of time. Clardy hopes that future adminis trations will extend the claw and spur emblems (if it is chosen) down Greene Street to Assembly Street and down As sembly Street to Williams-Brice Stadi um. SG plans to paint the new smaller USC emblems on Greene Street when they repaint the gamecock before the Carolina/Clemson game. The senate Athletics Committee will be responsi ble for repainting all USC emblems on Greene Street twice each semester. Many students living on or around the Horseshoe have probably noticed that they have a new place to play out door basketball. ror yean, the tenced court beside Woodrow has been unused. It remained desolate, with only the flimsy basket ball poles standing to remind students that people actually once played ball there. SG expressed uigent recommen dations to Campus Recreation to reno vate this forgotten area for student use. The renovation was approved and students began playing ball again on the tree new courts early this fall. SG will continue to work with Cam pus Recreation to improve these courts and search for other possible areas on campus for satellite recreational facili ties. SG was proud to be one of the spon sors of the first semi-annual Campus Cleanup that took place on Friday, Oct. 15. Clardy hopes to extend this effort to involve students in keeping USC beau tiful by proposing a new “Adopt-a-Side walk” program. This program will allow student or ganizations to adopt a specified area on campus. These oiganizations will be re sponsible for picking up trash in their adopted areas on a monthly basis. For recognition of their contributions, the oiganizations will have their name placed on a sign in the adopted areas. Clardy and the Senate Student Ser vices Committee are working with Keep America Beautiful and the Office of Fa cilities Management to design this pro ject. The last major project that Clardy hopes to tackle is renovating the tunnel that leads from the Law School to the Coliseum. He hopes to organize this effort with Freshman Council. Plans will begin to take effect early in the spring semes ter. The current proposal for the tun nel is to have student organizations adopt sections to paint using their own seals and/or symbols. The organizations will submit their designs to Student Government for approval and then they will have the op portunity to advertise their organizations on the walls of the tunnel. The entire tunnel renovation is to be completed by late spring. Student Government is sponsoring all of these special projects to improve student activism on campus. Many stu dents have opinions about what should be done to improve campus. Clardy hopes that some of Student Govern ment’s projects will help influence Stu dents to take a more direct role in im proving campus. All students and student oiganizations are welcome and encour aged to help Student Government with any of its goals. After all, actions do speak louder than words, so, “Don't sing it; bring it!” Director of Housing Affairs Here at USC, our housing mission states the following: “At the Depart ment of Housing at the University of South Carolina, we are constantly re newing our commitment to excel lence and education through the cre ation of a living and learning community that promotes academic success and per sonal development of students.” tir.tu —: a i icrv ITIUI 11 IIIl JIUU, J L/VpUlUIIVIIV of Housing is working closely with SG to fulfill the growing needs of the Car olina Community, solidfying the rapport between students and the University. This year has been exciting and extremely productive; starting from the design of the new online sign-up system to the pending completion of the South Quadrangle-East (projected finish date: fall 2000). The new online system, created to promote efficiency in the housing sign up process, has been successful in terms of its convenience and rate of student satisfaction with their housing assign ments. However, to increase student ap proval, Student Government, in con junction with the Department of Hous ing and Computer Services Division has devised a more efficient online sip-up process that allows students to make more informative living choices and per mits students to hace additional flexi bility. With the revision of online sip-up, students will be allowed to select up to four preferred roommates (for those opt ing to live in South Quad, Horseshoe, or Bates West residence halls), in addition to being provided with further infor mation on each residence hall (occu pancy, floor plan, visitation plans, and more). These options should be avail able to students for fall 2000 online sip up. In response to the demands of many students, SG has decided to embark up on new territory and have bepn, to the pleasure of many students, lobbying to the University for the expansion of Plan B visitation to 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. on week ends instead of the present 10am-2am time block. Still in the works, the visitation pro posal needs the support and encouage ment of students in order to pass the pro posal as university law. To ensure that the university hears the voice of the stu dents, a housing survey will be available to students during “Meet Your Student Government Day” for the explicit purpose of gathering student ap proval/disapproval of housing guest plans here at USC. These surveys will be available at the Student Services table, in addition to more information on other Depart ment of Housing/Student Government projects. Please come out to meet and support you SG on Nov. 3. Special to The Gamecock Members of Cabinet participate in Campus Cleanup.
