It is a hot top ic everywhere you go. Student Gov ernment is also very concerned about safety on campus. We feel that the best way to conquer this issue is to work on prevention. Students first must realize that our campus is within the borders of a city. We have no gates or bars preventing peo ple from entering our campus. This means that anyone can come onto campus, in cluding people who wish to harm stu dents. Our best efforts as individuals should be to be mindful of our sur roundings. Everyone on campus wants to feel safe. We in SG also feel this way. Mem bers of SG are actively pursuing efforts to make our campus safer for the stu dents. We have asked for trimming of the slirubs within the women’s quad, and we received this request. We are also happy to announce that several more call boxes are in the process of being installed around campus. Of course, the one thing that prevents cam pus from being safe is financial situa tions. Each call box cost approximately $3,000. Since the campus Safety Com mittee does not have a budget of its own, we are forced to subsist off of donations. SG wants everyone to be involved with making our campus a safer place to live. Director of Safety Jeb Bush and As sistant Director of Safety Candice Brad dock will be sitting out in front of the Russell House today to take suggestions on how to make our campus a safer place to live. After today, we are always willing to listen to any suggestions that you might have. Both of us have a mailbox in the SG office and would look forward to hearing any ideas you might have. SCSA Representative This year, the South Carolina Stu dent’s Association has been extremely busy trying to improve higher education in South Carolina. SCSA is an organiza tion comprised of SG representatives from publicly funded colleges and uni verities in South Carolina such as Clem son University, College of Charleston, Winthrop University, S.C. State, and the USC branch campuses. SCSA’s stated purpose is to “pro mote and defend the quality of higher education in the slate of South Caroli na.” SCSA was started by the SG pres l....a idents of the major colleges in the state in the early 90s, but since most of its members were seniors, it soon became inactive. A few years ago, the USC SG Vice President saw the pressing need for SC SA and began to recreate SCSA. In January 1999, SCSA held its first statewide conference at USC under the direction of current SG Chief of Staff Whitney Shively and also met with new ly inaugurated Governor Jim Hodges to discuss SCSA. The conference gained a great amount of statewide media attention be ing the first of its kind in South Caroli na. Cabinet see page s Special to The Gamecock f . I * i A > t
