She won’t have to wait long for that milestone, if what preseason practice indicated is true. “The team is very ready to compete. This was the best preseason I’ve ever had here,” she said. “The team is more ag gressive, athletic and team-oriented than any I’ve coached in a long time. In fact, the type of preseason we had reminded me of the one we had in 1990 at West Texas State, when we won the National Championship,” she said. Even more surprising is the list of sports in which athletes are most at risk. Swimming, diving, soccer and lacrosse topped a nationwide hazing survey re leased Monday by Alfred University. Track, fencing and golf were at the bottom. The size of the school didn’t matter, with Division HI schools not far behind Divi sion I schools in most categories. As for Division I scholarship athletes in big-revenue sports, they were more likely to be subject to alcohol-related haz ing. Otherwise, the playing field was found to be more or less level across the board. “That was a really astonishing thing to us,” said Nadine Hoover, principal in vestigator for the National Survey of Initiation Rites and Athletics, “because we expected to find places where this was much more prevalent. There is no signif icant difference between divisions or lev els of teams.” The study, conducted with the coop eration of the NCAA, was the first attempt to gauge the hazing problem on a nation al basis. The upstate New York universi ty surveyed 10,000 student-athletes, 3,000 coaches and more than 1,000 other ath letic officials from NCAA colleges and universities. Examples of hazing ranged from crim inal or dangerous acts, such as kidnappings and destruction of property, to ques tionable acts like yelling and cursing at freshmen or forcing^them to wear em barrassing clothing. Sixty percent of the athletes who responded said they took part in criminal, dangerous and/or alcohol-related hazing. “It’s appalling what’s going on,” said Ron Stratten, the NCAA’s vice president for education services. The study also found that men were more at risk than women and that haz ing was more likely in the East or South, and on rural or residential campuses. “I find the results of our study on haz ing to be horrifying,” Alfred University president Edward Coll said. “It’s perva sive. It’s dangerous, and it is behavior that is forced upon student athletes as the price of admission to a team.” Coll said he asked for the study after criminal chaiges were filed last year against four Alfred football players following a party at which freshmen allegedly were tied together and forced to drink.alcohol or water until they vomited. As a result, Coll said his university has taken a zero-tolerance policy toward hazing in athletics and called on other schools to do the same. He said coaches specifically need to stop ignoring the prob lem. “I think the coaches turn a blind eye toward it because many of them don’t think supervising their student-athletes _ outside their practice or game-day pro cedures is a part of their responsibility,” Coll said. “I think this is an issue we need to address to let coaches know that we do expect some accountability. “The coaches have a specific role to fulfill here, whether they like it or not,” he said. Stratten said the NCAA has planned no specific legislation in response to the study, but will address the issue with the colleges. “We’re going to raise the bar with re gard to our knowledge of this issue,” Strat ten said. The study defined hazing as “any ac tivity expected of someone joining a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses or en dangers, regardless of the person’s will ingness to participate. This does not in clude activities such as rookies carrying the balls, team parties with community games, or going out with your teammates, unless an atmosphere of humiliation, degra dation, abuse or danger arises.” Under this definition, only 12 percent of athletes said they had been hazed How ever, when asked about specific activities, the figure rose to 79 percent. The study also explored ways for schools to stop hazing. Recommended so lutions include written anti-hazing poli cies, more coach involvement and the de velopment of positive, team-sponsored initiation events that could take the place of private ones. “Hazing exists because it was done before,” he said. “That’s the only logi cal explanation I’ve ever had for Greek [fraternity] hazing. The sophomores and juniors do it because it was done to them when they were freshmen. ” . mhtm?Tjt»kmTiTl^!m^^B •Crushthe Campus Competition and well fly you to the National Finals • Play the new NCAA® Football 2000 game on the PlayStation® and win prizes • Check out the Tour updates at www.easports.coni SA SPORTS and die EA SPORTS logo are trademarks or registered trademarks of Electronic Arts in tl»e US and/or odicr countries.
