University of South Carolina Fall spi Kelly Maguire Journalism Junior USC sports is sure to have some- . thing to interest new students and parents. Fall sports include football, soccer, swimming and diving, and volleyball. Gamecock fans are looking forward to a thrilling season for all of the fall sports. Football Excitement has filled the air over the new South Carolina football coach, Lou Holtz. In a nationally covered story, the legendary coach was named to the helm of South Carolina's program in front of thousands at Williams-Brice Stadium on a sunny December afternoon. Along with the name comes a 216-95-7 all-time record, a National Championship, and a National Coach of the Year. Holtz has won 10 bowl games, ranking fifth on the all-time list and has led three different programs ? North Carolina State, Arkansas and Notre Dame ~ to national top 25 finishes and bowl victories. Two of his Notre Dame teams had the nation's highest graduation rates, including a perfect 100 percent rate in 1988 ? the same season the Irish won the national championship. And 12 of Holtz's players were selected in the first round of the NFL . draft while at Notre Dame. Holtz and his wife, Beth, have four children, one of whom is now working with the football program as well. Men's Soccer The men's soccer team is one of the most successful teams in all of USC history. In 1998 the Gamecocks lost two of its key players to the MLS draft. However the departure of All-Ameri- c can Clint Mathis-to the LA Galaxyand Josh Wolff-to the Chicago Fire- y didn't dampen the men's team. In- v stead head coach Mark Berson led ii USC to as high as a No. 3 national ranking. Is i ne Gamecocks compiled a loo record and made it to the second tl round of the NCAA's before losing 10 to Virginia.. n After an amazing 1998 campaign that saw a win over defending national champion UCLA and national powerhouse UNC, Carolina racked up L even more honors. L Goalkeeper Henry Ring and for- | ward Joey Worthen were invited to the national team training camps. Ring was also named third team AllAmerican. Women's Soccer The women's team looked pretty impressive as well last fall. A program ^ that is only four years old made a great run and reached the NCAA tourney for the first time in program history. The women's nrrxrram haH ire most successful season ever, finishing 11-7-1. Freshman defender Melinda Carter racked up more honors for the young team when she was named to the southern region first team. So watch as the Lady Gamecocks take to the field in 1999. It is sure to be an exciting season. Men's and Women's Swimminer and Diviner """& """ "*"& Florida State lost out big time when Don Gibb was named USC's new men's and women's swimming ISCOVER CAROLINA ms pre r oach this March. The two-time ACC coach of the ear now looks to better the men's and women's team and make a deep splash nto SEC competition. Gibb previously coached two vCAA champions and one Olympian. Gibb has also worked with more han 20 All-Americans. Meanwhile in diving, Columbia ative Michelle Davison has contin Villiams-Brice Stadium has a c: u, p 119 Byrne pare for ued to shine. Davison won the 3 and 1 meter springboard at the SEC Championship and along with coach Todd Sherritt the two Gamecocks were named SEC Diver and Coach of the Year respectively. Gamecock fans should look forward to great seasons this year. Volleyball Following an outstanding season in which head coach Kim HudsonChristopher saw her Gamecocks advance to the NCAA Tournament, the Carolina volleyball team continued to excel.
