Football
Excitement has filled the air over
the new South Carolina football
coach, Lou Holtz. In a nationally covered
story, the legendary coach was
named to the helm of South Carolina's
program in front of thousands at
Williams-Brice Stadium on a sunny
December afternoon.
Along with the name comes a
216-95-7 all-time record, a National
Championship, and a National Coach
of the Year.
Holtz has won 10 bowl games,
ranking fifth on the all-time list and
has led three different programs ?
North Carolina State, Arkansas and
Notre Dame ~ to national top 25 finishes
and bowl victories.
Two of his Notre Dame teams
had the nation's highest graduation
rates, including a perfect 100 percent
rate in 1988 ? the same season the
Irish won the national championship.
And 12 of Holtz's players were
selected in the first round of the NFL
. draft while at Notre Dame.
Holtz and his wife, Beth, have
four children, one of whom is now
working with the football program as
well.

In 1998 the Gamecocks lost two

However the departure of All-Ameri- c
