The Gamecocks came away with two decisive wins over UNC Greensboro and UNC Charlotte. In their first match, the team faced UNCG. Sweeping both the doubles and singles, the Gamecocks finished with an impressive 7-0 win. The first doubles team of Jerome Jourdon and Vladimir Pavicevic defeated Alex Lenhoff and Tony Mule in a pro set, 8-3. In other doubles action, Juan Gamboa and Jeff Bergman posted an 8-2 win, and Olaf Akesson and Tomasz Wawrzyniak won 8-1. The men were equally successful in their singles matches, with all six players winning in two straight sets. Freshman Dave Nelson posted a nearshutout of UNCG player Cedric LeRouzo, 6-0,6-1. With the first match taken care of, the team was in good spirits and looked forward to match No. 2. After dinner, the players began the match against UNC Charlotte. With the late starting time of 6 p.m., the coaches agreed to play only one doubles match and four singles matches. Mixing up the lineup, USC Head Coach Kent DeMars had Pavicevic play first singles and placed Jerome Jourdon on second singles.
