Liberal minded people across the country have been worried about what they've been doing in Congress ever since this "Republican Revolution." They came into office on such a wave of popular support, it looked as if big changes were coming to Washington and to our country in general. Now the rest of the country is seeing the party's internal divisions insiders have known about since we first saw the Contract with America. And unfortunately in the old slave states of the South, it is a bit more frequent. That's why, as an institution of higher learning, universities such as ours have to be leaders in the movement for multicultural understanding and acceptance. This has hppn a nrnhlem at. our university, as pointed out by many student multicultural groups. To help with this, Student Government is currently organizing a Multicultural Presidents' Council, which will feature the presidents of each multicultural student organization. The Republican Party has given us the impression of invincibility over the past four years. But just as all large groups with a membership ol such diverse opinions, they are vulnerable to internal problems. It just seems like such a shock because the Republicans have presented such a united front to us. Part of this can be contributed to Gingrich. He was adamant about keeping unity within the party. He knew divisiveness would only prevent them from fulfilling their legislative goals. But life will go on in Washington. Our present projects can be divided into two areas: those things that have been ac compnshed and tnose tilings that we are still working on. One thing that has been accomplished was a successful voter drive, which added more than 300 USC students to the voting population. Also, a program has been put in place called "Second Serving." This organization picks up food, which would normally be thrown away, from three different USC dining halls and donates this food to a local homeless shelter. In addition, SG has successfully lobbied and achieved an extension in library circulation hours from 11 p.m. to midnight. Contraception, by definition, prevents conception from occurring; any "contraceptive device" that prevents a fetus from continuing to grow gets there a bit late, and is more accurately described as abortion rather than contraception. "Emergency" contraception is an oxymoron; they haven't invented a Relativity Pill yet. I find it interesting that abortion should be considered a "women's issue." I'm especially curious about men who say, "It's up to the woman," as if she got pregnant by herself and it's her problem. Letting her make the decision seems to be the easy way out of it, doesn't it? One can think of a pregnancy as a temporaiy full-custody situationit's harder, then, to say that aborting a child should be up to the woman. A woman can't kill her child after it is born without going to jail for it. Birth seems a rather arbitrary line to draw. A woman has a choice, certainly, but she makes it well before she misses her period. Her choice is whether or not to have sex. and if she chooses to have sex. what birth control to use. I have no moral uncertainties about abortion, although it's not a moral iss discuss 1 by your Student Government. One final thing is the establishment of the Multicultural Presidents Council which will meet regularly and discuss race relations on campus. The next projects are those we are currently working on. Unfortunately, SG's hands are a bit tied because of the fact of the administration's understandable preoccupation with entrance into the Association of American Universities. However, there are several areas where goals can be accomplished.
