In his stunning victory, Ventura won 37 percent, or 772,285 votes. Democrat Hubert Humphrey III, son of former Senator and Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and Republican Norm Coleman, also a member of a Minn, political dynasty, were defeated. Using the slogans "Retaliate in *98" and "serving the people, not the parties, Ventura ran as part ottne National Reform Party, better known as the Ross Perot ticket, with Terry, his wife of 22 years, by his side. His victory could possibly be the most important event in American politics at the close of this century. As a candidate, Ventura appears to have completed all of the necessary tools required to fun for higher office. His six years as a member of the Navy (four years as an active duty SEAL, two in the reserves) and status as a Vietnam veteran not on ly helped to win votes, but also represented his loyalty and duty to country. Ventura also served as mayor of Brooklyn Park, one of the wealthiest Minnesota suburbs, from 1991 to 1995. Ventura made political mistakes, as any candidate does along the way. His most notable blunders were his likening the war on drugs to prohibition and his suggestion that prostitution should be legalized as part of our freedom of choice. Calling the "Say No to Drugs" campaign a failure without direction, Ventura went on to suggest the legalization of recreational drugs. We as full-time ind part-time students pay entirely ;oo much tuition toward lab fees/technology fees, for the school lot to take extra time to decide on vhat computers are the best for our noney. In the computer science departnent there have been a great deal of ireakdowns. The computers just will lot accept Zip disks which the comluter science courses were told to iuy, costing $15-$20 apiece. I was rery disappointed when the other lay my Zip disk was literally torn up iy the computer, which held the in ormation for my project. Anya Latimore Sophomore Internet porn column degrading towards men To the editor: I would like to respond to Ms. McCormick's article "Examining Men's Lust for Teenage Girls," (11-6-98). First of all, I would like to admit that 1 am a 2U year old male and l enjoy some forms of pornography. However, this fact does not in anyway make me "lost," or "need help." I have a steady girlfriend of five years and we have a very stable, safe, and productive relationship. It appears to me that Ms. McCormick has made a host of assumptions completely devoid of fact. In her article, her male friend "Brian" happened to enjoy looking at certain internet sites that featured young (or younger-looking) females. This in no way infers that all males enjoy looking at this material. Am I to assume after reading this article that all females are disgusted and resentful towards the porn industry? She bases all of her arguments on the alleged "fear of intimidation" that men harbor against women. This may be true for some, but I can tell you that the vast majority of people nk we are capable of playnuch better then we did." There is little, if any, political motivation. I agree that pornography should not be a substitute for dating, but it can be a safe alternative for promiscuous sex, and even an augmentation to already to enhance their own love making. Also, Ms. McCormick neglects to mention that other types of pornography are on the market. Not only is there the teen porn to which she refers, but there are also thousands upon thousands of other sites that feature older men and women, overweight men and women, and countless others fetishes. Somehow, she concludes that because her friend "Brian" accessed particular sites, all guys look at these sites, and all for the same reason (a reason that she apparently plucked from the air. The connections she makes are ill-founded and are obviously due to her own sexual hang-ups and bitterness). I admit that on average men view pornographic material more often than women, but this is because men are admittedly more visually stimulated than women. Why do you think women read more romance novels than men? It's just a different mean to met the same end: to get a little sexual excitement and varietv into one's life. Ms. McCormick, if you are going to write something as sexist and degrading as your last article, at least take the time to research the facts instead of making such broad assumptions based on your personal speculations. Women are just as infatuated with younger men. If you doubt this go see How Stella Got Her Groove Back or The Graduate. These are but two films, out of many, that deal with this theme.
