Gretchen Koeler-Shepley, assistant director of administration for housing, says that "Having those students here would contribute to the quality of life." Why is it honors students make the quality of life better? What does that say about mainstream students? That they are louder? Less interested in getting an education? Maybe constant contact with other honors students improves quality of life, if segregation by grades and test scores makes life better. Maybe, when you are around other serious students, you will be more likely to buckle down and study. Or maybe this is just blatant elitism. Of course, they can ncourages Uve cl8ewhere> but mty- in places that may not be as convenient. The very idea of segregating students by age is silly as well. The only advantage is that most sophomores may be going through some of the same experiences. But if there are only sophomores in the residence hall, they will not have the benefit of companionship, and thus wisdom, of upperclassmen the way they would if they actually live amongst older students. They also won't be there for freshmen with doubts and worries in the middle of the night. We think there are advantages to living arrangements in which people of different ages and abilities can live together and learn from one another. If nothing else, it gives us a taste of what the real world is like. In fact, it is a sleepy city. Which, probably, ^1 is not so bad columnist a megalopolis. However, on weekends, which start for most diligent and hardworking students somewhere on Wednesday, it gets a little busy at night. The famous epicenter of Columbia's nightlife, Five Points, offers a number of opportunities for alcoholic pleasures and meeting people. The area where I happen to reside is packed with different, but rather faceless, bars which do only one thing: they provide beer. And they do it welL Frightening amounts of beer and other beverages containing "sacred spirits" are consumed every weekend. HowevBlack professors needed at USC To the editor: I would like to submit this letter as a response to the resignation of Dr. Pigford and the current status of African American professors here at the University of South Carolina. I am a second year graduate student in the counselor education department. ' I am not a native of South Carolina, but I am a Georgia native and I attended Spelman College, a historically black college in Atlanta. I feel the resignation of Dr. Pigford is a great loss to the USC community. As an African-American student and former educator, I recognize the importance of providing diversity in the classroom when educating our students. Unfortunately, the impression that comes across at large universities such a USC is that as long as the faculty population reflects the majority student population (racially), then there is no problem. However, the Droblem is that all students have the right to a college experience that provides role models and networking at all levels in human existence (i.e., race, gender, religious orientation, etc.). What I valued most about my experiences as an undergraduate student who matriculated at a historically black college was the opportunity to be empowered and supported by the indi >oint; ^ POK CASH... itiife offers er, I did visit some places just to get the idea of what they are all about. The first place was Night Works. They told me that this was a place where I could dance. I love dancing. Alcohol does not come close to dancing when it comes to stress reduction and enjoyment. So I went to Night Works. It turned out to be a big bar with a tiny dancing area. The bar area was full of moderately intoxicated heavyset men looking for women. The dancing area is full of seasoned, heavily intoxicated, cosmetically-challenged women who are already dancing with other men. Pretty much a "lost hope" kind of place. The progressive student's alternative, just across the street, is Elbow Room, featuring underground five music. However, this is no big thrill for me either. Just another big, really crowded bar in essence. If you are a single male, the good news is that about 50 percent of the crowd consists of hot, young females in appealing clothes. The bad news is that they are likely to be clutching their jealous boyfriend's hand. It is a "no surprises, quality, collegiate place" Somewhere in-between is Pavlov's, a place just under my window. I like the name of it. Seems like the famous Nobel winner physiologist didn't torture to death hundreds of dogs in vain. Such an experience helped to propel me into both the work force and encouraged me to move forward in higher education. My point is simple. It does matter that colleges and universities work to diversify their faculty in order to represent what the new millennium will bring to all of us: a more diverse society. I believe that when this is not a priority, a strong message is being sent. I made a personal decision to attend Spelman. Those minority students who longed to go to college, and to USC specifically, should not have to endure "culture shock" in the classroom. Not that we can't all communicate positively and peacefully regardless of color, because we can. However, there is motivation and encouragement when a strong sense of identity and acceptance is present in the learning environment.
