"[Hispanic Heritage Month] is celebrated nationally," said Megan Hoffman, president of the Students Associated for Latin America. "USC should also reflect that tradition." Hispanic Heritage Month, held nationwide since 1989, lasts from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. USC has given their own title to this event: Hispanic History Month. This monthlong recognition is srbig difference from the Hispanic History Week that's been observed for the past two years. "We need to be more culturally aware, especially since Hispanics and Latinos are ex J U.. 4.1 TT C n D U? 4U? peLieu uy uie u. o. v^exisua uuicau tu ue tnr largest minority group in the United States by the year 2005," said Durley Florez, Hispanic History Month liaison between SALA and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. SALA and OMSA work together closely; OMSA Director Walter Jackson even serves as SALA's faculty adviser. "The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs has always given us financial support and advice with our programs," Florez said. In addition to OMSA, SALA had guidance from other sources on campus. "The faculty of the Latin American Studies program have been a great resource for us," Florez said. Other activities include "Christmas in September," an ongoing community service project that, through donations, will provide toys, nonperishable food items and clothes for Latino children of migrant farmworkers; "Latin America's African Roots, a student discussion panel facilitated by Faye Harrison, a professor in Women's Studies, on the African roots of Latin Americans; and "Latin Blast," a social featuring modern Latin music, a salsa band and a performance by a Venezuelan dance group. SALA is co-sponsoring some of these activities with the Department of Spanish, Italian and Portugese, Students Action with Farmworkers, the Department of English, the International Programs for Students and the McKissick Museum.
