"[Hispanic Heritage Month] is celebrated
nationally," said Megan Hoffman, president of
the Students Associated for Latin America. "USC
should also reflect that tradition."
Hispanic Heritage Month, held nationwide
since 1989, lasts from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
USC has given their own title to this event: Hispanic
History Month.
This monthlong recognition is srbig difference
from the Hispanic History Week that's
been observed for the past two years.
"We need to be more culturally aware, especially
since Hispanics and Latinos are ex

largest minority group in the United States by
the year 2005," said Durley Florez, Hispanic
History Month liaison between SALA and the
Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
SALA and OMSA work together closely; OMSA
Director Walter Jackson even serves as
SALA's faculty adviser.
"The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
has always given us financial support and advice
with our programs," Florez said.
In addition to OMSA, SALA had guidance
from other sources on campus.
"The faculty of the Latin American Studies
program have been a great resource for us,"
Florez said. "They bring speakers for our programs,
facilitate workshops, and offer knowledge
and guidance."
