Carter, Georgia's freshman quarterback, has a new nickname (Cobra, because he can strike anytime from anywhere) and a new No. 1 national ranking in passing efficiency. But Carter is too new to college football to know about South Carolina's pregame routine, which peaks with the "2001" theme booming over the loudspeakers at Williams-Brice Stadium as the Gamecocks run onto the field. Saturday's early 6 p.m. start for ESPN2 may take away from some of the pregame drama, but it should be imposing enough for Carter and other Georgia freshmen playing in their first road game. Already, Carter has heard stories from Georgia's upperclassmen who remember losing at South Carolina two years ago. For a wide-eyed freshman, ignorance is bliss. Carter insisted he didn't know about his No. 1 rating in this week's NCAA passing efficiency stats until told about it by a reporter. "I haven't even looked at the stats," Carter said. "I've been in bed with the phone off the hook. That's great, but like I said, it's not what I look at." Safety Kirbv Smart and other Geor gia seniors will try to change that before Saturday. "It's a different atmosphere," Smart said.
