Quincy Carter, Class of2001, knows
nothing about "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Carter, Georgia's freshman quarterback,
has a new nickname (Cobra,
because he can strike anytime from anywhere)
and a new No. 1 national ranking
in passing efficiency.
But Carter is too new to college football
to know about South Carolina's
pregame routine, which peaks with the
"2001" theme booming over the loudspeakers
at Williams-Brice Stadium as
the Gamecocks run onto the field.
That's fine nrlvsspv flartpr will have
to experience to appreciate.

South Carolina football at night is
regarded as one of the more intimidating
settings in the Southeastern Conference.
Saturday's early 6 p.m. start for ESPN2
may take away from some of the
pregame drama, but it should be imposing
enough for Carter and other
Georgia freshmen playing in their first
road game.
Already, Carter has heard stories
from Georgia's upperclassmen who remember
losing at South Carolina two
years ago.
"They've told me it will be pretty
hostile," said Carter, who has spent the
last three summers playing baseball in

For a wide-eyed freshman, ignorance

"I haven't even looked at the stats,"
Carter said. "I've been in bed with the

Georgia will make a legitimate effort

that won't happen.
Reality will hit hard Saturday.
Anthony Wright will have a huge game,

Similarly, when asked aboui "2001:

and shrugged. Apparently, he knew
nothing about the South Carolina tradition.
Safety Kirbv Smart and other Geor

"It's a different atmosphere," Smart

week because they've got a very loud
crowd. They've got a very rambunctious
