Schulman is quick to point out the differences between equal and equi table, noting that people are often misinformed about Title IX regulations. "We don't have to spend $50,000 on one sport if thaf s what we spend on another," Schulman said. "We simply have the obligation to make sure things are done in proportion." Schulman uses UVM's men's lacrosse team as an example. "They need a lot of equipment because it's a contact sport," he said. "Women's lacrosse isn't nearly as physical, so they don't need as much equipment. What we have to determine is if we're giving both teams what we need. For example, a school with a 55 percent female student body must offer 55 percent of its athletic opportunities to women. Schulman said football teams often throw those percentages out of kilter. Athletr ic departments spend the money on football and don't usually have enough to create and fund women's teams, so they simply cut the men's teams."
