It has been more than 25 years since
the federal government gave women
athletes a chance at an equal opportunity
in athletics.
Sarah Nelson, a former Harvard
i l 11.
lacrosse piayer, saia progress nas Deen
made since the passage of Title IX.
But Nelson, who now coaches at the
University of Vermont, said there's still
a lot of ground that needs to be covered
before men and women participate on
level playing fields.
"We've made some strides, but
there's still a long way to go," Nelson
said. "But we're headed in the right direction.
We just need to keep moving
that way, not just sit and let it happen."
In 1972, federal law dictated the future
of women athletes with the fol
lowing words: "No person in the United
States shall, on the basis of sex, be
excluded from participation in, be denied
the benefits of or be subjected to
discrimination under any education
program or activity receiving federal financial
assistance."
Since that time, high schools and
colleges have been required to provide
equal opportunities to men and

Mark Schulman, assistant director
of athletics at the University of Vermont,
said schools need to work together
to help solve some of the problems that
athletes and athletic administrators
face.
Title IX and gender equity are very
much a part of the everyday life of athletic
administrators," Schulman said.

vs. Equitat
points of 1
"Those of us in college athletics are constantly
checking ourselves to make sure
we do things in a equitable fashion."
Schulman is quick to point out the
differences between equal and equi
table, noting that people are often misinformed
about Title IX regulations.
"We don't have to spend $50,000 on
one sport if thaf s what we spend on another,"
Schulman said. "We simply have
the obligation to make sure things
are done in proportion."
Schulman uses UVM's men's
lacrosse team as an example.
"They need a lot of equipment because
it's a contact sport," he said.
"Women's lacrosse isn't nearly as physical,
so they don't need as much equipment.
What we have to determine is
if we're giving both teams what we need.
Are we meeting their needs in a fair

schools must provide opportunities for
athletes in proportion to enrollment.
For example, a school with a 55 percent
female student body must offer 55 percent
of its athletic opportunities to
women.
Schulman said football teams often
throw those percentages out of kilter.
"If you have 100 men on a football
team, how can you even that out with
women r nesaia. wnatscnooisenaup
doing is eliminating men's programs so
the percentages are equitable. Athletr
ic departments spend the money on football
and don't usually have enough to
create and fund women's teams, so they
simply cut the men's teams."
Schulman said if s not unusual for
a school with a football program to have
15 sports for women an 1 nine for men.

Nelson said schools need to find an
other way to comply with Title EX.
"It seems like there are revenu
sports that are untouchable, and cut
are made to balance those," Nelson said
While Nelson admits she's a foot
ball fan, although not at UVM, wher
there is no football team, she doesn'
think big programs should give thei
football and basketball teams the "rei
carpet treatment" just because the;
make money.
"A lot of schools benefit from thi
money from sports like football, but Ti
tie IX says thatrs not an issue, Nelsoi
said. "A lacrosse team can't be punishe*
because it doesn't bring in enough mon
ey. The money can't be a factor."
Both Nelson and Schulman agre<
that Title IX compliance must be ad
dressed by the university as a whole
"There's a lot that can be done
but schools need to view this as an is
sue at the administrative level. For i
long time, ifs been limited to the ath
letics department," Schulman said. "T
offer more sports, you need to find mon
revenue funds. Those can come fron
the university."
Nelson agrees. "We have to all lool
at the problems and solutions," she said
"This involves everyone, not just th?
athletic director."
